BY JOVE! I think I've got it!

I have been trying to figure out who the more "ruthless" and somewhat stern demeanor Merlin has in season 5 sometimes reminds me of. What threw me off was nearly EVERY. FREAKING. ONE. comparing him (and his "I grew up" statement) to Morgana. I kept thinking, no, that's not it, that's not QUITE who he reminds me of, he's not THAT mean/cold...

And by jove I do believe I've finally got it.

GAIUS!

He's acting almost exactly like his mentor back in seasons 1 and 2.

And, all right, given, Gaius isn't mean, or heartless, but he does sort have this "what are you up to" mentality that I do believe Merlin is starting to adopt.

A couple of examples

1) the harsh (but also kinda cute) way Gaius yelled at Merlin in episode one before he figured out who he was. You know, when Merlin saved his life and pretty much the first thing he did was bark at him, demanding who he learned magic from? Though he calmed down later. Merlin was sort of like that with the fake Druid boy in The Hollow Queen (how did you get in here? It wasn't hard? Oh yeah? Get out...).

2) The somber way Gaius sort of acted around Uther when he was making a big mistake but he couldn't say anything about it? Am I the only one who noticed Merlin acted a little like that when he figured out Gwen was evil (under Morgana's spell) but couldn't/didn't tell Arthur straightaway?

Also, rumour is Merlin is somehow going to come between Kara and Mordred. And people HAVE also guessed that Mordred/Kara will be similar to Merlin/Freya. And who kinda came between Merlin and Freya by ratting out the "cursed Druid girl" to Uther? Answer: Gaius!

If I'm right, I actually think this would make a lot of sense. I know fans have been complaining that he's not the same Merlin he used to be, all serious and what-not, but is it any surprise he would, given all he's going through, and has gone through in the past, end up mirroring the personality of the one guy who has known from series 1 he has magic and HASN'T kicked the bucket in the meantime? He spends the most time with him... Also, I got the feeling Gaius was kind of impulive like Merlin when he was young. I mean, he did a lot of nervy things that took some serious guts. Protecting a Dragonlord, stricking Alice's name off Uther's list of people to be hunted down and killed... etc...

So what do you all think?
