Thousands of Years Ago[]
- The Sidhe and the Dragons are the most ancient powers in the land [1].
- (Human) Magic, also known as the Old Religion, was born in the Crystal Cave [2].
- Dragons became spiritually connected to the Dragonlords, men who possessed the ability to talk to and command them. For thousands of years the sacred gift was handed down from father to son [3]. In the current era, a dragon is unable to resist the command of a dragonlord even if they wanted to [4]. Dragons are also unable to hatch from their Dragon Eggs until a Dragonlord summoned them into the world [5].
- The great dragon, Kilgharrah, was born more than a thousand years ago and seen civilisations rise and fall. [6]
- In the ancient chronicles, several fables speak of ancient swords that could destroy anything, alive or dead. The Chronicles of Beltain states, "Sir Marhaus looked upon the great sword, begotten in the dragon's breath and found it passing good." [7].
- The Mage Stone, a wonder of the ancients, was lost for a thousand years or more. [8].
- The Manticore was first referred to almost a thousand years ago. The Ancients lived in fear of it, trembled at its very name [9].
- The ancient chronicles speak of a heinous curse. It dooms its victim to turn at the stroke of midnight into a vicious, bloodthirsty beast. The writers of old called this creature a Bastet, a monster of nightmare that inhabits the twilight world between the living and the dead [10].
- The Cup of Life was blessed by centuries of powerful sorcerers to contain the secret of life itself [11].
- Long ago, the Witches of Meredor created a potion which would force a Sidhe out of a person (Changeling). The witches were some of the worst recipe writers that Gaius had ever known [12].
- The Diamair were once revered by all. Then, for hundreds of years, they were shunned and hunted until Euchdag was the last of her kind [13].
Hundreds of Years Ago[]
- Centuries ago, the Cup of Life fell into the possession of a great warlord. One night, he gathered his army before him and collected a drop of blood from each of his soldiers and through the Cup's powers the army was made immortal, causing unimaginable carnage. Only when the Cup was emptied of the blood that it contained the enchantment no longer held and the army was destroyed [14].
- Hundreds of years ago, The Fisher King reigned over a rich kingdom. The Fisher King was wounded in battle and the kingdom, which was magically linked to its ruler, began to fall into ruin as his condition worsened. It eventually became a barren wasteland, neither alive or dead and populated by wyverns. The Fisher King remained in the castle, his magic keeping him partially alive, waiting for the arrival of a new time. The time of the Once and Future King[15].
- The Legends of the Fallen Kings speak of the Fisher King's Golden Trident[15].
- Many years ago, before the birth of the Five Kingdoms, the land was in an endless cycle of bloodshed and war, but one man was determined to end all that. The ancient king named Bruta. He gathered together the elders of each tribe and drew up plans for the lands to be divided. Each would respect the others' boundaries, and drew it over the land as they saw fit. That man was Camelot's first king, ancestor to all that followed, including Arthur Pendragon [16].
- The Ancient Kings believed in equality of all things. The Ancient Kings ruled Camelot around an Ancient Round Table which afforded no-one more importance than any other. The table had 9 seats [14].
- King Bruta and King Loath are ancient kings.
- Records of the Kingdom of Camelot go back more than 300 years [17].
- War between the Nine High Priestesses of the Old Religion and The Ancient Kings: During their war with Ancient Kings, the High Priestesses of the Old Religion took the blood of a girl and mingled it with the blood of a snake, creating powerful monsters, able to kill with a single touch. However, the Lamia proved to be more dangerous than their creators imagined; the High Priestesses lost control of them and the Lamia continued to kill, unwilling to stop [18].
- The ancient Dochraid and the ancient sorcerer Nimueh might exist at this time.
- Hundreds of years ago, Daobeth was the greatest city in the Five Kingdoms. It was destroyed by dragons (Darkest Hour, deleted scene).
- 400 years ago, Ashkanar hid the last remaining Dragon Egg in a tomb named after him, the Tomb of Ashkanar. Ashkanar ensured that the egg was secure and that the parts to the tomb's key, known as the Triskelion, were hidden. One of its three pieces eventually wound up in the vaults of Camelot and one came into the possession of the Druids [5].
- About 300 years ago, Taliesin, a Seer to the great kings of old, died. It was said that the Crystal Cave was the source of his prophecies. Taliesin's meeting with Emrys/Merlin had been written for many years [2].
- For hundreds of years the Catha have guarded their ancient knowledge of the prophecy about the great battle at Camlann [19].
- The ancient prophecies speak of an alliance of Mordred and Morgana united in evil [20].
- 300 years ago, seven Knights of Camelot were seduced by the sorceress Medhir. One by one, they succumbed to her power and became a force of death and destruction, known as the Knights of Medhir. Their swords could cut through virtually anything, including chains that were strong enough to hold a dragon. They were only rendered inanimate when Medhir herself was killed. Then the knights fell where they stood. Yet, such was the power of the magic that bound them, the knights did not die. Instead they lay dormant in the halls of the castle of Idirsholas. The castle was abandoned and allowed to fall into ruins. No one dared enter the castle. Rumors spread that when the fires of Idirsholas burn, the Knights of Medhir will rise again [21].
- Cornelius Sigan was a powerful sorcerer who's spells helped build Camelot Citadel. He could change day into night, turn the tides and was the most powerful sorcerer to have lived (before Merlin). In the end, he grew too powerful and the king at that time ordered his execution. Sigan couldn't bear the thought that his wealth and power would die with him, so he became obsessed with finding a way to defeat death itself. Before his death, Sigan cursed Camelot, saying that he would one day return and raze the city to the ground. He trapped his soul in a jewel and he was sealed in a tomb underneath the Citadel. Years later, he was a figure of nightmare for those who grew up in Camelot [22].
- Camelot Traditions
- Records go back more than 300 years. In those records, there is nothing to say that a woman cannot challenge a knight to a duel [17]).
- For hundreds of years, Heir's Quests have been completed alone and unaided [15].
- Camelot's Decennial Tournament has been held every ten years for centuries [23].
- 200 years of history has had monarchs of Camelot marry other nobility, not commoners (The Changeling).
- Iron has been hewn from the rocks at the Ridge of Chemary for hundreds of years [24].
- Old Religion Traditions
- In the time of the Old Religion, the druids built shrines to appease and bring rest to restless and tormented spirits [25].
- In the time of the Old Religion, the High Priestesses and High Priests would gather on Samhain Eve on the Isle of the Blessed, where they would sacrifice a living human to tear the Veil between the worlds of the living and the Spirit World [26].
- Long before the time of the Great Purge, the High Priestesses would gather each year during Beltane at the Great Stones of Nemeton and summon the spirits of their ancestors [27].
- Before the time of the Great Purge, girls would be chosen at birth for the priesthood. They would be taken away from their families and brought up as initiates in the old religion. Many tried, few succeeded. For ordinary gifts were not enough. Only those possessed with exceptional magical power could ever hope to be one of the nine. Those who did not become High Priestesses became the Bendrui [19].
- The Old Religion practiced an ancient ritual called the Teine Diaga which uses the mandrake root to being unimaginable terror to the victim and make them slaves of the High Priestesses for eternity [28].

- 45-50 years ago, the Goblin was captured and put in a box in a secret wing of the library [30].
- Gaius took part in the High Priestesses' Beltane ceremonies to summon the spirits of their ancestors [27].
- Gaius knew Nimueh and regularly called her My Lady. It is possible that she held a place at Camelot court or that all High Priestesses did. Or he knew her before he came to Camelot [11].
- Gaius was a novice when Alice was a skilled healer whose magical ability was known throughout the Camelot [9].
Uther's Conquest of Camelot[]
- “When I came to this land, this kingdom was mired in chaos, but with the people's help magic was driven from the realm.”
- — Uther Pendragon[[The Dragon's Call|[src]]]
- Uther Pendragon conquered the kingdom and became its King.
- Uther created the Knights of Camelot based on those who were most loyal to him. The First Code was created to ensure that only descendants of those people could become knights [31].

- Gorlois was Uther Pendragon's best friend and the husband of Vivienne and held a high position in the court of Camelot. Vivienne possessed a healing bracelet that was forged on the Isle of the Blessed (The Sins of The Father).
- Many years ago, Gaius met Lady Catrina and treated her for an incurable bone disease. Uther knew Lady Catrina's father very well. Later, Uther received word from the north that the House of Tregor had fallen, it was uncertain who survived [34].
- Many years ago, Uther met with Lord Eldred of the House of Northumbria who had 4 sons [31].
- Gaius and Alice were engaged [9].
- Before the Great Purge, Julius Borden was a pupil of Gaius and caused Gaius a lot of trouble. During the Great Purge, he disappeared and, some years later, spent 20 years on a quest to find all three pieces of the Triskellion Key to the Tomb of Ashkanar], home of the last dragon egg [5].
- Morgause is born. Daughter of Vivienne, and assumed Gorlois. Morgause was smuggled out of the Camelot Citadel by Gaius after she was born and given to the High Priestesses of the Old Religion on the Isle of the Blessed. Uther was led to believe that Morgause had died shortly after her birth [17]. Morgause was either smuggled out because she was chosen at birth for priesthood[19] but instead her parents wished to keep her. Alternatively, she was smuggled out during the Great Purge.
- Morgana is Born. When Gorlois was away on the Northern Plains, Vivienne had a brief affair with Uther Pendragon and later gave birth to Morgana. Morgana lived in the house of Gorlois until his death when she was 10 years old [8].
- Wedding Tourney and Wedding of Uther Pendragon and Ygraine de Bois, and coronation of Ygraine de Bois [35].
- Arthur is Born When Uther's wife, Ygraine, could not bear an heir to the throne of Camelot, Uther asked Gaius to seek out the sorcerer and High Priestess Nimueh at the Isle of the Blessed. Uther struck a bargain with Nimueh that would allow Ygraine to conceive. Nimueh used magic to allow Ygraine to conceive an heir. But the bargain meant that a life had to end in order for a new life to begin, and Ygraine died in childbirth. Grief-stricken, Uther blamed Nimueh and had her banished from the court. On the night of Arthur's birth, Gaius aw a Questing Beast. [7] [11]
- 20 years ago, Ygraine's brother, Tristan de Bois, blamed Uther and came to the gates of Camelot and challenged him to single combat. Uther won. But in his dying breath, Tristan cursed Camelot to one day suffer his return [7].
The Great Purge[]
- Purge of the City of Camelot
- At the start of the Purge, Uther drew up a list of everyone suspected of using magic. One by one, they were hunted down and executed. As a close friend of the King, Gaius was permitted to see this list. When Gaius discovered his beloved Alice on the list, he struck her name off, thus giving her time to escape [9].
- Gaius decided to stop practicing magic and to remain in Camelot as Court Physician, because he was scared and felt he had no choice[9].
- Gaius attempted to save several of his friends, including Balinor[3] and Alice[9] but he did not save those who practiced dark magic[32] and he watched Nimueh's friends burn[11].
- Edwin Muirden's parents were burned for practising dark magic. When they were being burned, Edwin tried to save his parents but failed and was horribly scarred. Gaius tended to Edwin's wounds and then he disappeared from Camelot[32].
- Alvarr's parents were captured by Uther's forces and were burned at the stake (apparently Alvarr witnessed this happen). He was sentenced to death as well, but shortly before his execution, whether by magic or non-magical means, he escaped and fled from Camelot and later rise up against him[20].
- During the great purge, Uther drowned many he suspected of sorcery including children[4].
- Possibly, another victim of the Great Purge was Daegal's mother who Daegal claimed was killed by Uther for the magic she had. However, Daegal was lying to garner Merlin's sympathy at the time [36].
- Fall of the Isle of the Blessed
- In the last days of the purge, The Crystal of Neahtid was taken from the sorcerers. A great many sorcerers died trying to protect it. Previously, it was guarded by the High Priestesses on the Isle of the Blessed, before it was taken by Uther and locked into the vaults of Camelot [20].
- When Uther attacked the Isle of the Blessed, the Horn of Cathbhadh was smuggled to safety before the temple fell [27].
- During the Great Purge, Uther hunted almost all the Blood Guards and killed them.
- Extinction of Creatures of Magic
- Uther pursued and slaughtered creatures of magic, including the Dragons, Dragonlords and the Gean Canach, hunting them to extinction or near extinction [37][3] [1].It is not known how many creatures of magic were left. The last dragon egg was hidden 400 years ago and so there'd not been any new dragons for 400 years [5].
- Uther tricked one Dragonlord, Balinor, to lure the Great Dragon to Camelot under the pretense of wanting to make peace with it, only to capture and imprison the dragon beneath Camelot to be an example (The Dragon's Call). Gaius helped Balinor escape Camelot and flee to Ealdor [3].
- 20 years ago, the Great Purge ended. Uther Pendragon captured the Great Dragon and "freed" Camelot from the evil of sorcery [29].
After the purge[]
- Camelot's court records were sealed and Uther forbid anyone from re-opening them [32].
- Witchfinders and Bounty Hunter jobs became more prevalent [38] [10].
- Some druids blamed Uther for their suffering and stopped being peaceful such as Ruadan [13]. Others pitied Uther and his hatred, including Cerdan[39] and Aglain[6].
- Less than 20 years ago, Merlin is Born. After the Great Dragon was captured, the Dragonlord Balinor fled to Ealdor, where he took refuge with a woman named Hunith who he fell in love with. Uther's relentless persecution forced them apart and Balinor fled Ealdor without knowing Hunith was pregnant [11].

- Lancelot's family was killed raiders destroyed his village in the Northern plains [31].
- ~18-20 years ago Elena was born [12]: Daughter of Lord Godwyn. Her mother died in childbirth. Shortly after her birth, a Sidhe Elder came to her in her sleep and turned her into a Changeling, a human with a Sidhe implanted in them. He then sent his Pixie, servant Grunhilda, disguised as a human, to be her nurse and watch over her to make sure she was taken over at the right time, when she married Arthur.
- Sir Leon grew up with Guinevere and Elyan. Gwen's mother worked as a maid in his family's household. As children they used to play games together and catch frogs[36]. Guinevere's mother probably died a few years ago, presumably when Elyan was still young since Gwen practically raised Elyan [41].
- When Morgana was 10 years old, Uther sent Gorlois into battle and promised him reinforcements. The King later failed to send the promised reinforcements, resulting in Gorlois' death [8] [40]. Uther promised Gorlois that he would look after Morgana and subsequently readopted her as his own daughter (It is likely that Vivienne died before Gorlois as she is not mentioned.) Soon afterwards, Guinevere became the personal maidservant to Lady Morgana.
- When Arthur was 10, Uther held a tournament in Arthur's honour. The Sarum of Amata attended [36].
- About 11 years ago, Mordred was Born.

- The accord Camelot struck with Cenred was years in the making [42].

- Gwaine's father was killed fighting for Caerleon's army. His mother was turned down by Caerleon when she went to him for help. Gwaine never knew his father. It is possible that he died young or that he was always at war.

- The Battle of Denaria - During a battle with Caerleon, Caerleon was defeated by Uther at the Battle of Denaria, but retreated to the Castle of Fyrien. Victory would have been denied to Camelot if Uther hadn't known of a secret labyrinth beneath the castle. “Fyrien was greedy. So, to avoid Camelot's levies, he dug tunnels from the castle to the sea. That way he could smuggle goods into the kingdom without anyone knowing.” “When Caerleon was defeated by my father at the Battle of Danaria, he retreated to the Castle of Fyrien and it seemed a victory would be denied us, but my father knew of a secret labyrinth beneath the castle.” Arthur fought with Uther, so it certainly wasnt before he was born. Arthur grinned. “He never saw us coming. And neither will Cenred.”
- Duel between Odin's son and Arthur: Odin's Son challenged Arthur to prove a point. Arthur didn't want to fight him but he did. The fight was to the death and Arthur won. Odin's son was killed. Arthur was very emotional around these types of challenge, and they are less prevalant during his reign. King Odin blamed Arthur and sanctioned multiple attempts to assassinate Arthur [44].
- 3-4 years ago, Elyan left Camelot. Previously he had been getting into a lot of trouble[41].
- The Battle of Othanden between Mercia and Camelot happened shortly before the Excalibur episode since Sir Pellinore had not recovered from his wounds [7].

After realizing that the Dragon was too powerful for them to defeat, Arthur and Merlin went on a mission to find Balinor, a Dragonlord and (unknown to Arthur) Merlin's father. They found Balinor who at first refused to return to Camelot, believing that it was perfectly fair that The Great Dragon should have revenge for everything Uther had done to him. Balinor was eventually convinced to return when he realized that Gaius, whom he owed a life debt, was in danger. Arthur told him he would be rewarded but Balinor replied that he sought no reward.
