    • Hi, I miss both, Arthur and Merlin. They were such good friends. I still feel sad because it ended with Arthur's death, leaving Merlin alone...

    • Me too! @Belgianmerlinlover They were really good friends, why did they have to make Arthur die? :c And okay @PotterMoreFan, I signed the petition, thanks for bringing it to my attention C:

    • I agree! I'm such a huge fan of the show, followed it since I was 12 and I've grown as the show has grown. I was devastated when I knew it was finishing...

I was hoping that they would have Pendragon babies running around the castle but I guess they stuck with the legend on that part...

I'm definitely going to miss Merlin from my tv screen, now I have to result to Merlin re-runs on Sunday nights from now on.

Arthur was my favourite character too... :(

    • The ending Is so .. stupid.

They change the whole legend and stick to it at the one time when NOBODY likes the Legend?

And even then they change it?

You can´t just let one of the main charecters die! If he (or she) is bad .. let´s kill her! But the good people don´t die!

In my opinion the 5 series should have  been revolving aubout Arthur somehow finding out about Marlins magik  ... IN THE BEGINNING!!!! Hello ... reviling it at the end was stupid It kinda destroyed this whole thing I had imagend ... with Arthur finding out and NOT telling Merlin but allways watching and notecing that he still trusts Merlin even If he has Magik  ...  and the whole part with them still together might be right in thew settings ... but still ... I´d rather have Arthur find out in the beginning and somehow tell in Merlin to leave .. and he does but still keeps saving Arthur and Camelot

Well I had a LOT of ideas about the whole magik revieal thing ... I do not i repeat DO NOT like this ending!

      I miss Arthur!

      Bring him Back.

      I WANT a 6 Season!

    • I completely agree!! I thought Series 5 would be about everyone discovering Merlin's magic and how everyone dealt with it. But no, drag it out in the last ever episode...honestly do u think that 50 minutes was long enough for Arthur to process that his manservant, friend, and occasional punching bag has magic?? I think not, especially considering his past history with magic- his mother and father died from it and the many betrayals due to it, Morgana, Mordred and Agravaine etc.

They could have kept the series going, the return of nimueh perhaps? Revival of Arthur?

Yeah they didnt follow the legend until the end, i mean the lancelot /gwen thingo didnt happen during their marriage, just their engagement. And did it really contribute to Arthur's downfall??  I think not, because why was there 3 years of peace and prosperity between series 4 and 5?

I miss Arthur too :( he was the best!! I want him back...

    • I agree with most of te above comments. I loved this show, it had everything...fun comedy(especially the banter between Merlin and Arthur), action, fantasy, great monsters and creatures, a love story, great relationships, a slew of wonderful characters, good and bad. I became a fan later in the series but have made up for it by watching it over and over from the first episode to the last. Merlin and Giaus, Arthur and Gwen, all feel like good friends to me...like I care about them and love seeing them. I know lots of folks love Morgana, and I did in the beginning, but I grew to dislike her, especially her cruelty. All in all, I love the show so much that I even over look the fact that they managed the last season so poorly. I repeat this in every post but they wasted four episodes on the Evil Gwen story line when they had so many other things they needed to cover in the last season.  I too miss them and wish there was some way to bring the show back. I will use the link above and sign the petition...and hope every fan does too.

    • I guess we can't expect the actors to stay doing the same show forever. Killing Arthur off at the end was so utterly unnessecarily cruel. And all the things they could've put in regarding the return of magic and Arthur learning to accept Merlin has magic - such a wasted opportunity.

        Loading editor
    • Well, at least Gwen had a good attitude toward Merlin and magic. I have to hope that whatever was destined to come of Arthur and Merlin's work for a better Camelot and Albion would be continued by Gwen and Merlin.  Also, the way they left Arthur's death , with Kilgharrah saying he was the Once and Future King, that he would return when needed most, leaves me to think they were leaving the door open for his return maybe as a spirit like Balinor , who came to Merlin when he needed encouragement. I read in a screen rant.com article about Merlin that the company that manages the show was working on a spin off. It gave no details, but I made me hopeful that we might see our beloved characters again. Listening to interviews and watching videos of the making of Merlin leaves me with the impression that the actors/actresses really enjoyed doing the show. They are really good at their craft, and I am sure all of them will go on to make films or tv shows. Many Game of Thrones fans want to see Katie McGrath as Lyanna Stark in flashbacks...she has a lot of fans. Personally, I want to see more of Colin Morgan and Bradley James...both did an awesome job.

I do agree that it would bave been much more rewarding to have had at least a few episodes of Arthur and Merlin after the magic was revealed. There was so much they could have done....And, at the very end to break away from the usual formula that good wins out over evil in the end was very disappointing to most fans. it would have been mice to end the series with a shot of Merlin and Arthur riding up to Camelot after Arthur was healed. I guess that is just my fantasy.

    • I WANT ARTHUR BACK!!!!!!!!!!!

He did not need to die at such a young age.  What were the writers thinking????  Kill Arthur. . . Seriously?  There is something really wrong here.  What about Gwen?  and his knights and being the once and future king of Albian?  And Gwen?

Oh poor Gwen.  She has only been at Arthur's side as Queen for 3 and 1/2 years.  What happened to them living until old age and a big happy family?  They did not get a goodbye scene when he died which is so heartbreaking.  The only reason I watch Merlin is because of the happy romance between Arthur and Gwen.  I am not very happy with this season based on the romance level.  What happened to a last scene kiss every episode like season 4?  And even season 3 had its fair share of romance but season 5? Horrible on that catagory.  Its like the writers did not know what to do with them now that they are married.

        Loading editor
    • I know what you mean. I personally enjoyed the Merlin Arthur relationship, which most of the time was fun well meaning banter, and of course the love story between Arthur and Gwen who despite all sorts of odds against it, flourished anyway...This season overall has been much darker, had less of the comedic tone. In the first few seasons there was a typical formula, some bad guy or creature threatened Camelot, or Arthur, or Uther, and it was usually up to Merlin to figure out how to thwart them and protect his friends. Creatures were killed, bad guys(male and female) were either killed or gotten rid of in some other way. Good triumphed over evil, and unless it was a two part story, there was usually a happy ending, This year there were many episodes that did not happen with all te episodes.

    • Have to agree with everything everyone has said.  I am still hopeful (maybe in vain, who knows?) that the announcement that season 5 would be the last is just a teaser.  I know the writers are no longer with Shine and have set up their own company.  The fact that they announced LAST JULY (2012) that they were in talks about a movie trilogy and a possible season 6 doesn't make any sense now.  Why would they say that if they only ever intended there to be 5 seasons?

I understood that all the actors and crew as well as the French crew at Pierrefonds believed there was going to be a 6th season so it all sounds very odd.  That ending looked and felt rushed to me.  Maybe the fact that they didn't have Merlin burn Arthur's boat as he sent him over to the island means they might just bring him back after all????   Not in modern day though, please.  Seeing Merlin, old and alone and waiting was just too painful.

        Loading editor
    • Yes, and now with spin off talk, it is all strange. I agree that the last few episodes felt very rushed, like they didn't have the time to do the ending the way they had planned to. The ending has left almost all the fans feeling very sad, which is a different feeling than the show in general. It was sad to see Merlin in modern day mostly because you know that those he was close to have all died. I do believe that he goes back to Camelot...there really isn't any reason why he wouldn't?? All the work he did with Arthur towards the goals they had for Albion would be or naught if he didn't help Gwen to continue. Gaius, Gwen, and the Knight's were essentially his family...definitely his best friends after Arthur. Merlin would out live them all, except may be the Once and Future King, if Arthur was to come back....I guess that is one possible spin off possibility...Merlin and Arthur in modern day. Though I think having them back in the days the show had been set in would be more fun.All we can do is wait and see, and watch the five seasons over and over.

        Loading editor
    • I agree with all of you, it was a rushed and strange way to end the series with Arthur's death. I think they felt restricted to 11 episodes per season, and they wanted to find a  way to end the season once and for all.

        Loading editor
    • I suppose one of the reasons that it felt so unnatural for Arthur to die is that they deviated from the legend in so many other ways, that you thought they would keep Arthur alive so he and Merlin could create the Albion that they had referred to for the whole five seasons. For five seasons we saw Merlin protect and save Arthur from death and harm so that he could fulfill this great destiny, but it felt like he never made it to that point. We can only hope that we have not seen the end of this wonderful show that had captured the hearts and minds of so many fans.

      I was like:

"W-W-WHAT DID HE D-DOOOOOOOOOO?!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE WAS A G-G-GOOOOOOD-D-D-D KI-I-I-IN-N-N-GGG!!!!!!!!!" I cried like a freaking baby. Then I saw my friend and we just basically stood there hugging each other in tears on the 7th of Jan and everyone was looking at me like what the hell?

I couldn't even set foot in my room coz everytime I did. I just stared at all my Merlin stuff and burst into tears sobbing: "Arthur. Arthur. Arthur. ARTHUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    • After the ending of the series, I literally had no words to say how much I absolutely dreaded the ending. At the same time, I understood why the directors chose it. It was a way to close up the story for a great show. However, I feel like the series, for five years, had this entire build-up of events that I thought was going to pay off. I felt like we were only beginning to reach the climax of the entire show. I was expecting more than just 10 minutes of battle, I was expecting more on Morgana's death, and I was definitely expecting more on how Arthur would figure out about Merlin's magic. I mean, the entire show was built around the fact that Merlin kept saving Arthur's life, more than anybody could count, without him even knowing it. Like most people, I was hoping for him to discover it probably a few episodes before the ending, to see a more realistic reaction from Arthur's part, because it was rushed. It was too quick of an ending. I didn't buy it that after everything Arthur had seen magic do in wrong, he could forgive Merlin that easily for keeping it from him for so incredibly long. And the ending was just too sad and heartwrenching to bear. Gwain, the most loyal knight of them all, died unwillingly, Gwen was left a widow without a proper goodbye, and Merlin is left immortal, left to wait so many years, watching these generations of people he loves die, to wait to see Arthur rise again, which makes no sense whatsoever because the kingdom eventually falls to form the modern world today. Lastly, one of the things I don't understand is why now? Why is it that Merlin suddenly decided to declare his talent for magic, why now did Gwen figure out about Merlin, and why didn't Merlin just ask the dragon to take him to the island to heal Arthur? However, in a point to the favor, I am glad to say that I don't think there was a better way than to bring Arthur's life to an end. His last words were absolutely beautiful. "Just hold me.... Thank you," he said, to Merlin. No other words could have possibly made me feel even more mesmerized. I just... I can't even... sdlghwgiwhoghsdkv!!!

I'm extremely sorry for this long passage. I guess I'm just kind of left in a rage. I also just read the Bradley James (the actor that plays Arthur) has shot down any more possibilities of playing his role again if a movie or another series is to be made.

Overall, however, it was a pleasure to ride this entire way with the show. I loved being part of the cast and journey, and this will forever be one of the best television shows that has ever set foot in the world of film. Bravo, to all the actors that retold one of the greatest legends in history! :)

    • I was totally in love with Arthur's character and I mean that both literally and figuratively. I cried in the end. However, I thought it was nicely done and to be expected.

I absolutely loved his burial. We'd seen Freya, then Lancelot, followed by Elyan go that way. The noble burial across the lake where he will someday return again was so poetic and touching.

      Brilliant.

    • I am still in denial on how the series ends. I can't sleep and close my eyes even a  second the whole night after I watched the ending.

From the start of the series there is one thing  I always curious, is when Arthur going to find out Merlin has magic. Being good friends as they are in the whole series, I imagined that when Arthur finds out, he will be furious for a while (maybe they will fight about it in couple episodes) but in the end friendship and their bonds win, they becoming even closer since now that they are no secret among them anymore.

I still can't believe that they make it happens at the last episode! It just seems too desperate. And making Arthur accepted it in just last minutes of his life just make it worse. I always imagine that at first, being stubborn as he is, Arthur refuses to give Merlin the credit he deserves. But in the end, after Merlin saved his life couple of times, Arthur finally accepted that he needs Merlin.

Anyway, still wondering why Arthur has to die in such young age? Even if they want to kill Arthur (screaming in pain at this fact), why can't they show that they grew up until at least age 40 then he died peacefully and succesfully as the greatest king ever?

I told my friends who haven't see this series to watch Merlin, in scale 0-10 this series is 100!  But I also told them that the ending just so bad that it is also scale 100 in scale 0-10 for a bad ending!

Oh dear Lord, I think it will take me a long long year to accept the fact that the ending is just the way it is.

Denial is still on and progressing.

    • All series have to end.  Clearly, if the characters playing Merlin, Arthur, or Morgana wanted to move on- that's it.  While we wanted far more of the realization of Merlin's magic & far less of the ever repeated plotlines, these actors are people with wants & desires of their own, including quite likely to stretch themselves in other roles.   They are excellent actors & that is why we liked them so much & will miss the characters they built.

If we look at it from the perspective that this season HAD to end the series, we can appreciate more fully the great acting in the last episode :-)

Merlin could have called him earlier, so the dragon could have taken him to the isle much quicker, but no. Arthur didn't die, I refuse to believe it....

    • Yeah, I hate Uther too. He's to blame for Morgana's initial bitterness. Also, I like Gaius, but I dislike him too, if that makes sense, because of his hypocrisy.

    • I was so sad about the ending I have started writing my own version of series 6. I didn't change anything at the end of series 5. I just treated the last scenes as previews of what was coming in the future. My daughter who also loved the series enjoyed reading what I have written so far. At least to us it no longer feels that Arthur is gone. If I can do it with no writing experience I'm sure the real Merlin writers can as well.

    • I'm pretty sure someone else has said this already, but the Colin Morgan and Bradley James version is finished.

I love Merlin, and I would be happy if they made a Season 6, but Season 5 is the final season, and there is nothing I can do about that.

I suppose I'll just be content with watching it from beginning to end over and over again on my mom's laptop. You see, my sister got her friend to get the whole series (part by part) on her USB , and now, it's all on my mother's laptop :)

Just be glad that Merlin actually revealed his 'gifts'.

    • Hey! Merlin fans are you still around?

The good news is that someone (a Belgian or Frenchman?) has written a book that can be considered a sequel to the BBC Merlin TV series, in which Arthur returns! I came across it accidentally while I was looking for interesting new books in the Internet for Christmas, and found it at www.lulu.com. The book is called Merlin and the Dragon Love.  Check it out and spread the word!

I hope it will be a best seller, so that someone may decide to turn it into a movie. I already bought several books to give as gifts to friends. I hope fans will make it a hit! Wouldn't it be great to see the trio Colin Morgan, Bradley James and Eoin Macken back in action?

    • Dear Merlin Friends,

The Merlin legend will be with us for a long time, in many variations.  That's how strong it is.  I just recently finsihed watching the whole series for the 4th time and while some of the silly episodes seemed even sillier this time, the 4th and 5th season were as strong as ever and the last two episodes again filled me with sadness and satisfaction at the same time.   And inspirations. Merlin lives and Arthur, Morgana and Gwen pop up in the most unexpected places.  Keep an eye open for them all....

      All the best,

    • Hi Rhuddem,

Thanks for your message and for letting me know about your book. I skimmed through the first part a little and it seems very nice, poetic and lyrical. Well done. I am rather new to Merlin wikia; that's why I did not know about your story. Are you a writer? I will try to find some time during my vacation and read more.

By the way, Mad Tiger and Ma Tigre are one and the same person. I'm still a little confused using this sight and I have not been able to sign in tonight. When I wanted to post my message with the name Mad tiger about the new book, something went wrong when I clicked on the Post button. I had to reboot my computer. The second time I thought I should register first, but I was not allowed to use the name Mad Tiger. Instead I chose Ma Tigre and I posted my message. And now I find that I have the same message posted twice under two names and I don't know what to do about it! It looks rather silly!

I have watched the series, and to tell you the truth I found many of the episodes silly or repetitive or quite disappointing and contradictory! I think what has gripped and inspired the audience and writers like you is the acting. I found the actors (all of them especially the main characters) beyond reproach. And of course the directors were also superb. I also enjoyed the music, which is a very important element in a movie. The stories were not as good and soon became exasperating; and I suppose that is why the series lost its popularity. There are series that go on and on for ever which are not, in my opinion, half as interesting, but their stories are captivating to many people, not to me though, I cannot stand them and hardly ever watch them because the acting is not so good, like Dr Who, just to name one!

I have not received my Lulu order yet. It should arrive before or on next Tuesday. Once I've read the book I'll keep you posted.

      Wishing you a happy 2015,

Mad Tiger = Ma Tigre  !!

The ending Is so ..

There's no way that they're going to bring it back for a Season 6. While you're right in that they stuck to the legend at the one time it was bad to, they did it in a way that left the viewers wanting more (like you said)--that way it doesn't just leave them like other shows do when they're done. Other shows have happy endings, so the viewers feel: okay, the characters I've been in love with forever are happy. I might not know what necessarily happens to them in the next twenty years, but I know they're happy and they're together (or whatever).

With Merlin, it's always haunting you. Will Arthur come back? Yes, Arthur finally accepted Merlin for who he is, and at the last moment, he still saw him as the same person he's trusted for years (and his best friend), but we're still left wondering what happened to the rest of the characters. What happens to the rest of the sorcerers? We know that Gwen was kinda cool with magic when she realized that Merlin was a sorcerer all along. It was kind of cool how she didn't even care that Merlin lied to them since they met. She just knew how close he was with Arthur and that was enough. She trusted him. But will she keep magic outlawed to follow her late husband's wishes (as far as she knows)? Does Merlin ever go back to Camelot to help Gwen out? What was with that weird shot of Leon and Gwen? I know that that's not part of the original legend, but they killed Lancelot off, so who knows?

But most importantly, what happens to Merlin? We know that he's left alone, waiting for Arthur to come back... so what does he do in those 1000 years? Nothing? It's really tragic. Just like Hamlet--arguably the greatest tragedy in the world--will stay with us because of what could have happened, it's the same with Merlin. It haunts us. Forever.

    • Hi Again Rhuddem, (or Merlin after),

It is good to know that a lot of Merlin is coming soon. By the way, what is Collin Morgan doing these days? I'm a little out of touch these days.

As promised I just want to report back on the new Merlin book I told you about: Merlin and the Dragon Love by Emile De Emme. I was too busy during my holidays to read, but I managed to finish the book last week end. It is quite an interesting beginning, but this part is just that: it sets out the background for what is to come (and I hope that the rest comes soon), because there is nothing of dragons in this first part, although on the back of the book it promises to tell us about some dangerous dragons!

I had an interesting surprise because this story is not just about the untold amorous affaires of Merlin; it is in fact a topical book. Although it is set in the 6th century, there is much actuality in it as it touches on recent religious trends; and it basically condemns all religions for creating much hatred among people. Here Merlin is a ‘philosopher’ as well as a good friend and a loyal supporter of Arthur. In a passage near the end of the book he muses:

And what if there is no universal soul, no spirit, and no god, contrary to what     many claim? What if the spiritual world is a product of imagination and wishful thinking? What if people wither and die just as grass and flowers do? What if there is no after life?

And then later on he muses:

'How can a man kill another and hope that the gates of heaven will be opened to receive him? Is heaven full of assassins? What kind of heaven would that be? All this religious bravado has made this world a worse place to live. They have created the hell they dread right here on this earth. Can I ever dissuade them from their ridiculous superstition? Can I ever convince them that, in actual fact, the apple is still on the tree, untouched and harmless, for otherwise they would not be so foolish and ignorant today?'

There is also an interesting interpretation of another famous character; he is depicted in a different way; but I will not spoil it for you by revealing his name since you may want to read the book yourself. He is much to my liking especially when he says:

' My religion is to defend justice and integrity, and to defeat iniquity, discrimination and wrongdoing. I don’t need some old fools tell me what is right and what is wrong based on what was written hundreds or thousands of years ago by people who had no idea of our modern world and its requirements. We cannot run our lives as did our forefathers. We need to adapt our ways and manners to the demands of the world today. There is little wonder that following the old ways is leading us nowhere. Fortunately I do have a brain and can tell right from wrong today.'

I certainly do agree with Merlin and this other man ! …

I had another surprise, (I suppose I should not be surprised because the author is French and they have a different way of looking at sex) since he calls everything by its name and does not feel shame what so ever, and describes certain things about private body parts in an unusual way (I must confess unusual for me because I have not read any porno books and don’t know how they describe things).

He also hints scornfully at women who find sadist – masochist sex desirable and satisfying. He obviously does not approve of 50 shades of Grey! To be honest I have not read that book, I only heard a televised interview with the authoress and was pretty shocked when she said that:

What motivated her to write this story was that she was tired of working at BBC every day as well as doing all the house chores and taking care of her husband and kids; and fantasied a relationship with a man who would support her financially and surround her with riches and comfort even if in exchange he treated her as his slave and expected complete obedience!!

I was completely horrified on hearing that the book is or was a best seller and that women are going crazy for it etc.! I wonder what type of women would go crazy for this kind of thing. I said to myself this must be Islamist propaganda to re-establish female slavery in the West as it is practiced in Islamist countries. Who bought her book making it a hit? ISIS? Who paid her 5M to turn her book into a film? ISIS?  As I said I have not read that book and don’t know what the ending is. I hope the heroin finds sense at the end and realizes what a mistake it is to trust a rich sadist who will get rid of her after a few months, as soon as he finds another pretty doll to toy with and torture! I did read somewhere that such men do exist in Muslim countries and they have harems full of such pretty women. Is that life what modern Western women aspire to?

I find it really ‘scary’ that Western women can be so easily brain washed into believing that being a rich and powerful man’s puppet is an ideal situation. What happened to a hundred years of women’s lib movements and struggles? Mind you many brave men put themselves forward to support their women so that they could gain their rights and equality. Are British women, like this ghastly authoress, prepared to throw all that away in a fortnight? Personally I prefer independent girls who can stand on their feet and don’t need a man to pay for their food and hairdo.

In summary, I feel that this French author is worried (just as I feel rather scared) about the state of Islamist trends penetrating the European society, in particular France; and is trying to find parallels with what took place in the early centuries of Christianity when religious fanatics influenced and changed the much advanced and educated and open European societies and burnt all the scientific books and established the completely hideous religious states suffocating everybody and ‘enslaving women’ (a term used by the author).

I suppose a similar situation will take place in Europe as it has already taken place in many Muslim countries. I met a middle aged Iranian couple during my vacation. They told us that they had fled Iran after the Iranian revolution, which they believed was brought about by Western powers. Most of their friends who were intellectuals were either killed or managed to run away as they had done. They said that during Shah’s regime the country was striving to become more progressive and that women were enjoying many equal rights with men and they were practically emancipated in the large cities. They said that they cannot believe that in this day and age the Sharia law has been the principle rule that runs the country for more than 30 years and nobody in the West is worried about it. They cut thief’s hands and blind people in Islamic courts, women are practically imprisoned and are under total rule of the head of the household, a fanatic who can marry 4 wives and can divorce them whenever he wants and have as many concubines as he wishes and commit many barbaric acts in the name of religion as in ancient times!! They said that it is unbelievable that we in the West go about our daily life and are not aware of what horrors are awaiting us. Soon we, too, will have to say goodbye to progress, science, quantum mechanics, and the theory of evolution, discovery of space, music, theaters, opera houses, bars and night clubs, pretty girls walking down the street …

Next I will read your book and report back on my feelings and thoughts, even though you have moved on. I also hope that your new books will appear soon.

      Ma Tigre

Thank you for a good story: Merlin After. Reading is a luxury for me these days as I don’t have much time for myself. But I managed to read the first part of your story. It is sad but powerful. Well done. I cheated and read Part four before reading Parts 2 & 3. The ending is brilliant and hopeful. I totally agree with Merlin, or rather with you, that this world is such a dreadful place to be in. I don’t read the news any more. It’s too scary!

The last part has made me curious to read the other two chapters that I skipped. Anyway, congratulations, and hope your future work will be just as good.

Thanks very much for your positive comments!  My current Merlin novel is close to being done. It will be quite different from Merlin - After which is so closely based on the TV series.  This new one is more based on the legends, in a way....but I won't say anything more at this point.

More info later (not too much later I hope...)

    • Hey guys, I'm new around here, but I've just finished watching the final episodes for the first time. Man, what a ride. I loved this show, and I love the characters. While I can't say that I loved the ending, or even that I liked it really, I have to say that it was good.

      But now I want more.

Where can I get the book Merlin After? Tried searching for it but no dice.

Now that it's been almost 4 years after the show ended, do you guys think there's any chance of them returning to do a new movie? Or an entirely new show.

I would actually like to see Merlin and Arthur in modern day, trying to find out what the heck is going on now. And seeing a new, modern but at the same time, traditional, problem, and they just, you know, solve it together.

Anyways, I miss the show. I'll have to rewatch it, but it won't be the same.

Any other Merlin-like show that you guys can recommend?

    • While Arthur does die in the old legend, this was not the same as the legend - it was a prequel of sorts as a very young man - it just doesn't fit the storyline of this series to have it end this way with him dying so very young and not accomplishing everything they said he would with Merlin - starting with the very first episode of the series.  That just doesn't make any sense as the things the events of the entire series, starting in the very first episode, that we are building up to see over the course of 5 seasons...ends with none of it occurring.  Then they compound this horrendous decision to have Arthur die with the title character Merlin apparently exiling himself from the rest of his friends to wonder in grief for a thousand years or more.  That's just disgusting on the part of the writers - renders the entire series completely pointless.  There are endings which aren't good and aren't particularly satisfying for a series, but having one that destroys the main storyline of the entire series to render the whole series unwatchable again is another thing entirely - if we were to try watching it through again, all of those deep conversations between Arthur and Merlin, Merlin and Gaius, and Gaius and Arthur, so many other conversations and events (such as the Fisher King and the Dragon)...ultimately no longer have a meaning - knowing how it will turn out for our main story heros...all of those great, amazing episodes and show moments now ring hollow as we know it isn't going to happen - ending in death for Arthur and never ending regret and misery for Merlin.  Even if they stuck with the ridiculous decision to kill off Arthur - Merlin should have been depicted as going home to continue Arthur's work by serving his Queen, Gwen (also Merlin's friend) and her court (where he had other good friends) and completing the work he started.  Gwen and Arthur were married for a time so it would have been entirely conceivable she would have had his child...perhaps even showing flash forward scenes of Merlin continuing to serve and then mentoring as a father figure the fatherless child of his good friend in the same way Gaius had done for him - and see the ultimate depiction of this great Kingdom and Albion we were waiting to see.  That would have shown Merlin had closure to his grief and was honoring his friend's memory by continuing what they had started together.  Instead, they depict Merlin as abandoning his friends in his grief - he was not shown in Gwen's Court - and wondering aimlessly for a thousand years in hopeless misery...as though his life had and has no purpose.  That's just messed up.  The writers should be ashamed of themselves - they created an amazingly well done story and then decided to just up and ruin all those amazing scenes by rendering meaningless.

5 years later and still fans talk about it so passionately. Quite touching imo.

I completely agree that they fluffed the ending. I have rewatched Merlin a couple of times but I don't necessarily always watch the last season because of the ending :/ I hope they do a movie soon (wishful thinking, I know).
