Merlin has already been recommissioned for a third series for BBC One and the news has been confirmed in a press release by the British Broadcasting Corporation and Shine Limited. According to star Anthony Head the third series starts shooting in March 2010 and the first episode of Series 3 is due to be released in late September.

- It has been confirmed that Morgana played by Katie McGrath, will return into this season. It is expected then for Morgause and Mordred to reappear.
- When asked in an interview (Dec 23, 09) whether the dramatic second series finale set the tone for the third series, Colin Morgan replied,"I think so. Those who have been following the second series will see as it has progressed it gets quite dark. It's setting up quite a lot of serious storylines for the future, and it is taking a darker tone. It still has that humour and charm, but there's definitely those darker themes taking over. Definitely, by the end of the second series, a lot of the characters, especially Merlin and also one other character, will have been changed forever, really. Big things are happening and big things are yet to come. So hopefully those storylines will be continued."
