The Royal Library (also called the Hall of Records) is a library located within the citadel of Camelot. It is managed by Geoffrey of Monmouth, who also appears to live in it.

The library contains all of the castle's important archives, including court records, historical accounts, and the genealogies of noble families. It also contains hundreds of books on a variety of subjects.

History[]

Merlin779

Merlin uses his magic to forge a seal of nobility for Lancelot.

To help Lancelot become a Knight of Camelot, Merlin forged a seal of nobility by using his magic to copy a page from a book of genealogies of noble families. The seal identified Lancelot as the fifth son of Lord Eldred of Northumbria.

Lancelot succeeded in becoming a Knight, but Uther grew suspicious when he recalled Lord Eldred only having four sons and ordered Geoffrey to investigate. Upon checking the records, Geoffrey confirmed that the seal was a forgery and Lancelot was arrested and stripped of his rank (Lancelot).

When Gaius became suspicious of Edwin Muirden, he visited Geoffrey in the library and asked to view the court records from the time of the Great Purge. Geoffrey initially refused because those records had been sealed, but later changed his mind and brought them to Gaius's chambers (A Remedy to Cure All Ills).

When Arthur challenged the Black Knight to a duel, Merlin searched the library for information on weapons that could kill the undead. He was discovered by Geoffrey, who showed him The Chronicles of Beltain and read him part of a fable about a knight who wielded a sword begotten in a dragon's breath. This story inspired Merlin to ask the Great Dragon to burnish a sword for Arthur (Excalibur).

When Morgause challenged Arthur to a duel, Geoffrey searched the records to see whether her challenge was valid (The Sins of the Father).

Gaius sent Merlin to the library to find The Bestiary of Phylum of Cambria. He asked Geoffrey where it was, but the librarian could only say that it was somewhere in the east wing and that he hadn't seen it in many years.

When Merlin finally found the book, it was on top of a tall bookcase. He retrieved it and accidentally triggered a secret door that led to a hidden room. The room was filled with magical objects, including a grimoire and a lead box from which he accidentally released a Goblin. He tried to return it to the box, but the Goblin escaped into the castle and later possessed Gaius.

Phoenix IV

Gaius identifies the Phoenix Eye.

To prevent Merlin from forcing him out of Gaius's body, the Goblin took the grimoire from the hidden room and used it accuse him of magic. Merlin was arrested, but soon escaped from prison and snuck back into the library to retrieve the lead box from the hidden chamber (Goblin's Gold).

When Morgana gave Arthur a magic jewel, Merlin and Gaius searched the library for information. They eventually identified the stone as an eye of the phoenix, a magical object that would consume Arthur's life force (The Eye of the Phoenix).

Merlin visited the library to search for information on the Manticore. He later snuck into the library during the night so he could conduct more research without Geoffrey interrupting him (Love in the Time of Dragons).
