A rabbit's foot, believed to guard against evil spirits, was given to Merlin by Gaius who claimed to have been given the item himself by his mother as a child.

Merlin later took the talisman with him to the Isle of the Blessed. When Merlin's mother Hunith was sacrificed in exchange for Arthur Pendragon's life, she fell gravely ill and Merlin gave her the rabbit's foot for luck (Le Morte d'Arthur).
