- “It warns that the effect of the Mortaeus will be more rapid if an enchantment is used during the flower's preparation.”
- — Gaius to Guinevere[src]
The Mortaeus Flower Enchantment was an enchantment used to accelerate the effects of the Mortaeus Flower's poison.
History
Nimueh cast this enchantment on the Mortaeus Flower petal that she used to poison Merlin. She did so by chanting a spell while swirling the petal around in the water of her scrying fount. She then removed the petal and hid it inside a chalice that Merlin later drank from.
After ingesting the poison, Merlin quickly fell into a coma and developed a high fever, respiratory distress, and delirium. He later developed a rash on his arm when the poison reached its final stage.
Ordinarily, the Mortaeus induced a slow and painful death over four or five days. When accelerated by this enchantment, however, the poison entered its final stage within hours of ingestion, at which point death could be expected within two days.
Gaius ultimately cured Merlin with a potion made from the Mortaeus Flower's leaves. Because the poison had been created with magic, the antidote also had to be enchanted for it to be effective (The Poisoned Chalice).
