Mary Collins was a sorceress whose son was executed for the crime of witchcraft. The execution was witnessed by the people of Camelot, including Merlin and Morgana, as a warning against the practise of enchantments. She wears an amber necklace from which she draws magical power to alter perception – which she uses to kill a servant girl – and a poppet, which she uses to kill Lady Helen of Mora.
She promises revenge on Uther by threatening to kill Prince Arthur, stating: "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a son for a son". She escapes before Uther can capture her by vanishing into the wind; she later intercepts Lady Helen on her way to Camelot, kills her, and uses a glamour to take on Helen's appearance in order to gain access to the king. Her glamour is incomplete, however, as her true form can be seen in mirrors; once she arrives at Camelot, a servant girl catches a glimpse of her in a mirror, and is murdered for her discovery.
At a feast celebrating the twentieth year since Uther drove magic out of Camelot, Collins sings to the court in the guise of Lady Helen, simultaneously weaving an enchantment that puts the court to sleep and causes the castle to age exponentially. Merlin, who is present, avoids the effects of the enchantment by covering his ears. When Collins produces a dagger, intending to throw it through Arthur's heart, Merlin uses his own magic to drop a chandelier on her. Her spell broken, the members of the court begin to awaken, but with her last bit of energy, Collins hurls the dagger at Arthur. Merlin against uses his magic to slow time and pull Arthur out of the dagger's path, after which Collins dies, having failed in her quest for vengeance. (The Dragon's Call)
