Griffins were creatures of magic with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. Being born of magic, they could only be killed by magic. Any mortal weapon that struck them - even steel - would shatter on impact.
Biography[]
A Griffin attacked Camelot during the reign of Uther Pendragon, who sent his son Arthur and some Knights to kill it. They failed, but it was later killed by Lancelot when he struck it with a lance that had been enchanted by Merlin (Lancelot).
Merlin later mentioned how he fought the Griffin while ranting to Gaius about how difficult his life had become since he arrived in Camelot (The Once and Future Queen).
Trivia[]
- Prior to the Griffin's attack on Camelot, they were not believed to be real, as Gaius was unable to find any mention of them in his bestiaries and was forced to consult records of myth in the castle library (Lancelot).
