It’s the Feast of Beltane, the king must look kingly.
Merlin to Arthur[src]

The Feast of Beltane was a tradition in Camelot. One such occurance of this was interrupted by Morgana and Helios' surprise attack on Camelot (The Sword in the Stone). It is first mentioned by Arthur, who says it ended in a food fight (The Poisoned Chalice).

Beltane is the exact opposite of Samhain. Series 4 begins with Samhain's eve (The Darkest Hour) and ends with the Feast of Beltane. Samhain marks the beginning of the dark season, the winter, a break in wars, conquests and farm work. Beltane opens the light season, a season of hope and the return to the activities. According to the druidic mythology, the bonfire takes a large place in the festivities, marking the time of purification and exaltation, and it's quite ironical that the enemies of Camelot set the city on fire.

Trivia

  • As Uther's says in The Mark of Nimueh, who played by fire must die by fire, so Agravaine and his men will be exposed to the wrath of the Great Dragon, as is what happened in the second part of The Sword in the Stone.
  • Beltane or Beltain is one of the most important celebrations in the Pagan religion.
