- “You will never be released, for what you've done! I'll make sure you never see the light.”
- — Merlin to Kilgharrah[src]
The duel between Merlin and Kilgharrah took place after Kilgharrah tricked Merlin into sacrificing his mother's life to save Arthur.
Events[]
When Arthur was bitten by the Questing Beast, Kilgharrah advised Merlin to seek help from Nimueh on the Isle of the Blessed. Nimueh agreed to use her power over life and death to save Arthur, but for her magic to work, someone else would have to die in his stead.
Merlin bartered his own life and Arthur was saved. However, he later discovered that instead of taking his life as agreed, Nimueh had taken his mother's life instead, causing her to become fatally ill. Furious, Merlin confronted Kilgharrah and learned that the dragon had known what Nimueh would do. He realized that Kilgharrah was not the friend he'd thought he was, and was only concerned with his own freedom, and swore that he would make sure Kilgharrah would never be released.
Enraged, Kilgharrah attacked Merlin with his fiery breath, but Merlin blocked the flames with his magic. He told the dragon that he wouldn't see him again and left (Le Morte d'Arthur).
Trivia[]
- Merlin was forced to break his vow and seek Kilgharrah's advice when Camelot was attacked by Cornelius Sigan. In exchange for his help, Kilgharrah made Merlin promise that he would one day free him, which Merlin did following the invasion of Camelot (The Curse of Cornelius Sigan, The Fires of Idirsholas).
