Look, what a... beautiful thing I created today. He looks a bit terrifying, ngl. Especially the mouth 😬. I hope you recognize him as Merlin😅

Season 1 Episode 2 – Valiant
Previously...
Gaius: You are still healing from the effects of the snake venom. You need to keep resting. In the stories you read, did Merlin convince Arthur on his own?
Me: Yes.
Gaius: Then I'm sure that you can trust him to do so now.
Me: All right.
Gaius: Ok. I'm going to get more ingredients to make more of that antidote. Just in case Valiant uses the shield to harm anyone else.
Gaius leaves the room and slowly lay back down again. What Gaius said reminded me of something. What was it? I quickly sit up again.
Me: Morgana!
I can't believe that I forgot about what happened to Morgana. I should have told Merlin and Gaius right away. But I had to go and explain my origins to them. I could have told them any time, but now I have to wait and just hope that maybe the whole snake can persuade Uther of Valiant's guilt. I know that Morgana's testimony could be invaluable, but she wasn't present in the court the first time, so she probably wouldn't be now. As I contemplate these things, I pick up my sword from the night table next to Merlin's bed. I pray to Aslan that I would heal quickly so that I can get rid of that horrible man.
Third Person POV – Arthur's Chambers
Meanwhile, in Arthur's room, Merlin walks in and slams the snake on Arthur's table and starts explaining what happened.
Arthur: *sceptically* You? You killed this snake?
Merlin: Er, no. Josiah did. But I saw the snakes come alive when I was walking past Valiant's room. They looked just like this one that bit Josiah while he was walking in the corridor. You can talk to Gaius, you can see the puncture wounds in Josiah's leg where the snake bit him. Josiah beat Valiant, he had to cheat.
Arthur: Valiant wouldn't dare use magic in Camelot.
Merlin: Josiah was walking alone at night. No one could see the snake bite him.
Arthur: I don't like the guy, but that doesn't mean he's cheating.
Merlin: Gaius made an antidote to the snake venom. Josiah's conscious, he can tell you what happened. If you fight Valiant in the final, he'll use the shield. It's the only way he can beat you. Look at it! *picks up the snake* Have you ever seen any snakes like this in Camelot? Much less wandering the palace?
Arthur takes the snake and looks it over.
Merlin: I know I'm just a servant and my word doesn't count for anything. I wouldn't lie to you.
Arthur: I want you to swear to me what you're telling me is true.
Merlin: I swear it's true.
Arthur: Then I believe you.
About ten minutes later, most of the court has assembled at Arthur's behest. Uther strides into the throne room, very annoyed.
Uther: Why have you summoned the court?
Arthur: I believe Knight Valiant is using a magic shield to cheat in the tournament. *the court gasps*
Uther: Valiant, what do you have to say to this?
Valiant: My Lord, this is ridiculous. I've never used magic. Does your son have any evidence to support this outrageous accusation?
Uther: Do you have evidence?
Arthur: I do.
Arthur motions for Merlin to come forward, and Merlin hands Uther the snake. Uther examines the dead snake suspiciously.
Josiah's POV
As I recline in Merlin's bed recovering, I suddenly remember something important. When Valiant was summoned to court, he sent one of his snakes to kill Ewan. He probably did the same to me. I decide to very carefully get up and hide by the door to strike it as soon as it comes in. I slowly attempt in vain to get out of bed, but my equilibrium is still off. I realise that there is only one thing that I can do: wait for the snake to come to me.
Third Person POV – Throne Room
Uther: Let me see this shield.
Merlin: *whispering to Arthur* Don't let him get too close.
Arthur: Be careful, my lord.
Arthur draws his sword as Uther inspects the shield. Gaius enters the room.
Arthur: As you can see, my lord, this snake matches the ones on Valiant's shield exactly.
Gaius: *whispering* Merlin.
Arthur: *whispering to Merlin* We're going to need Josiah. See if you can get him.
Merlin walks over to Gaius and asks if Josiah is allowed out of bed yet. Gaius shakes his head.
Valiant: As you can see, My Lord, it's just an ordinary shield.
Arthur: He's not going to let everyone see the snakes come alive.
Uther: Then how am I to know that what you say is true?
Arthur: I have a witness. Lord Josiah of Narnia was bitten by one of the snakes from the shield. Its venom made him grievously ill, however, he has received an antidote. He will confirm that Knight Valiant is using magic.
Uther: *suddenly worried* Where is he?
Arthur: He should be here... *goes to Gaius and Merlin* Can you get Josiah?
Gaius: He's not able to get out of bed yet.
Uther: I'm waiting!
Arthur: I'm afraid the witness is currently unable to come to the court. He is still recovering from the effects of the poison.
Uther: Well, have someone go and get him! You worried me!
Arthur: Of course, my lord.
Arthur gets some guards and makes his way to the Physician's chambers, Merlin and Gaius on his heels. Uther sits down on his throne with a serious look on his face. This was not a situation that he wanted to be in. The tournament was supposed to foster alliances not threaten to split people apart by intrigue. He groans with his head in his hands.
Josiah's POV
I wait for the snake to arrive, staring at the slightly open door in front of me. I begin wondering if Merlin was successful and how the trial is going. Suddenly, a hiss pulls me from my thoughts. The snake, green and shining as poison, slithers into the room and crawls up the end of the bed. It stares at me unblinkingly for a moment. I ready my sword. The snake strikes!
{A/N: Hello Once and Future Fans! I'm really excited for what's to come for this fanfic! I hope you like this part! Things will now be moving a little faster. Let me know what you guys think!}

Season 1 Episode 2 – Valiant
Previously
Me: You are the one who is to protect the Once and Future King. It is your destiny.
Merlin looks very uncomfortable and starts to try to deny it. I hold up my hand to tell him to stop and continue.
Me: You're a wizard, Merlin.
Merlin's jaw hangs open and Gaius looks more shocked than Arthur did when that fake Lady Catrina turned back into a troll. I quickly hold back a chuckle at remembering that image.
Me: Or rather, a warlock. You were born with magic and have been using it before you could even walk or talk.
Merlin: How do you know that?
Me: Like I said, I'm from the future, though not in this dimension. In my world, your story is a famous legend. Anyway, I always loved the legends of King Arthur. Then one day, my family was visiting a land called Britain in the aftermath of a great tragedy that had struck our world. All of the sudden, I went through a portal and landed in Narnia. For the next few years, I lived in Narnia and tried everything I could to return to my world, but the Creator told me that I would not return home until I completed what I had been brought here to do. Then I was sent here, to Camelot. So now I must complete my mission before I return to my own timeline.
Gaius: You must bring about a treaty between Camelot and Narnia.
Me: Yes, but that's not the whole story. My full mission is to protect Merlin and help him to fulfil his destiny of bringing about the Golden Age of Albion. As I said before, I meticulously studied the legends of Merlin and Arthur, so I know much of what occurs in the next few years. I am supposed to change things so that many of the lives that were lost may be save, but I may not share that information until an event has already been altered. For example, in the original timeline, Sir Ewan was the one who fought Valiant, who used his shield snakes to win the battle. Sir Ewan died of his wounds. My presence changed that. I beat Sir Ewan, then Valiant. But as a man once said in my world, "When you mess with time, it tends to mess back." Hence, I was bitten instead. At least I got Valiant out of the tournament. *Merlin and Gaius look at each other guiltily* What's wrong?
Gaius: When you were unconscious, Valiant was re-entered into the tournament to take your place.
Me: What?!! That wasn't supposed to happen! Now Valiant will fight against Arthur in the final! We have to warn him!
Merlin: Yes, we do. We were hoping that you would have seen something incriminating when you were fighting the snake.
Me: *groaning* No, I didn't. I just saw the snake show up. No sign of Valiant or his shield. But would the snake not be enough evidence? Surely everyone could see the resemblance between that snake and the ones on Valiant's shield.
Gaius: I suppose that is our only option.
Merlin: I'll go talk to Arthur right away. *leaves*
Me: Wait! Let me come with you!
I try to get up, but I immediately get dizzy and fall back down on my bed. Gaius rushes over and checks me over.
Gaius: You are still healing from the effects of the snake venom. You need to keep resting. In the stories you read, did Merlin convince Arthur on his own.

Season 1 Episode 2 – Valiant
Previously
Third Person POV
Merlin: But that means that Valiant is back in the tournament! He could put Arthur and the other knights in danger with that shield!
Gaius: I’m sorry Merlin. I can’t help it. It’s my duty to inform the king when a competitor can’t compete. I have to go.
Merlin sighs as Gaius leaves. He goes to his room and sits next to Josiah.
Merlin: Don’t worry, Josiah. I’m going to fix this.
Third Person POV
The next morning, Merlin is helping Arthur get ready for his next match. As he fastens Arthur's armour, Merlin sees the next opponent. A giant of a man wielding a large dual-handed sword.
Merlin: You're telling me you've got to fight that?
Arthur: Yes, and he's strong as a bear. But he's slow.
Merlin: Ah, and you're fast.
Arthur: Exactly.
As Merlin finishes helping Arthur with his armour, Morgana absently strokes Guinevere's cloak in the stands.
Gwen: You're not worried, are you?
Morgana: No.
Gwen: I'm sure Josiah will be okay, my lady. Gaius said that he would be well by morning right?
Morgana: Yes, but I would think that Uther would say something about last night by now if Josiah had told him.
Gwen: *takes Morgana's hand* Don't worry, Morgana. Everything will work out fine.
Morgana gives Gwen a tight-lipped smile. By the tents, Merlin sees Valiant put down his shield. Gaius approaches Merlin.
Gaius: How're you getting on?
Merlin: Fine. Just doing my job. Minding my own business.
Arthur fights the bear knight and wins fairly easily by outmanoeuvring the giant. Then, to Morgana's horror, Valiant comes onto the field and wins his next match. She visibly pales when, after the round, Valiant smirks at her. Merlin and Gaius look at the final brackets.
Merlin: Valiant's going to fight Arthur in the final. He'll use the shield to kill him.
Merlin and Gaius return to their chambers to check on Josiah.
Gaius: Merlin, about what I said yesterday– Look, Uther wouldn't really listen to you or me, but you are right. We can't let Valiant get away with this.
Merlin: But we don't have any proof.
Gaius: Perhaps Josiah saw something that could incriminate Valiant in some way.
Merlin: But he hasn't woken up yet.
Gaius: He should be up momentarily.
At that moment, they hear a noise come from Merlin's bedroom. Then someone calling out. Merlin and Gaius hurry up the stairs and open the door to Josiah trying to sit up.
Josiah's POV
I awake to the sun setting in the distance. For a moment, I forget where I am when I see that I'm not in my room. I am in a small room on a rudimentary bed. There's a cupboard, a desk, and a table by the bed. On the table is a cup of water, I go to take it, but my equilibrium is off, so I knock it to the floor. I decide to call for someone to come.
Me: Hello?
At that moment, Merlin walks in, followed by Gaius. Merlin comes and sits on the chair at the right side of the bed, and Gaius comes to the left side and starts examining me.
Gaius: Welcome back.
Me: Merlin? Gaius? What happened? Where's Valiant?!
Gaius: You've been out for a long time from a snake bite.
Me: *remembering* Oh yeah. Please tell me I killed that snake.
Merlin: You did. What happened?
Me: I was going to speak to the king when all of the sudden one of Valiant's snakes appeared out of the shadows and attacked me. I deflected it from biting my neck, but it was too fast and bit my leg. I was able to cut off its head, but then I passed out.
Merlin: Was Valiant there?
Me: No.
Gaius raises his eyebrow and Merlin looks confused. Then I realise what I just said. I guess it's now or never.
Merlin: Then how do you know that the snake was Valiant's? You were unconscious when I discovered that.
Me: Well, this got more interesting. *humourless chuckle* It's a bit of a long story. Ok. I'm not from here.
Gaius: Well of course not. You're from Narnia.
Me: I'm actually not originally from there either. This world is not the only one that exists. I'm from another dimension, the original dimension.
Gaius and Merlin are extremely confused at this. I really have to come up with a better way to explain this.
Me: I live in the year 2022. However, I'm not from the future of this world. I live in a world where magic does not exist. It was the first world that the Creator made. After that, He made new worlds parallel to my own, variant timelines where He changed the very fabric of reality. In this one, he created magic. The first human inhabitants of this world were actually people from my own world who were transported here by the Creator Himself to fill it and rule over it. To some of them, He gave the gift of magic as way to befriend, and if necessary, control some of the different "mythological" beings that He created here. In my world, though, He gave the events of this world as stories to be told; legends that have inspired people for generations, including the story of the Once and Future King, which is intricately entwined with your story, Merlin.
Merlin: *nervous* What is so special about my story?
Me: You are the one who is to protect the Once and Future King. It is your destiny.
Merlin looks very uncomfortable and starts to try to deny it. I hold up my hand to tell him to stop and continue.
Me: You're a wizard, Merlin.

Morgana’s POV
Me: Josiah!!!
I immediately run to find Gaius or Merlin. Josiah can’t die because of some stupid snake! He’s the only nobleman who really treats me with respect. Heck, he just saved me! Now, it’s my turn.
Third Person POV
Morgana bursts into the physician’s quarters right as Merlin and Gaius are finishing dinner. She runs to the table, breathing hard.
Merlin: Morgana!
Gaius: My lady! What’s wrong? Here, sit down.
Morgana: *panting* Jo- Josiah!
Merlin: *concerned* What happened with Josiah?
Morgana: He’s in the corridor outside my chambers. He was bitten by a snake! He killed it but he’s collapsed on the floor!
Merlin runs out the room in a flash. He gets to Josiah and picks him up, along with the snake’s head. He hurries back to the physician’s quarters and puts Josiah on the bed. Morgana watches with apprehension as Gaius examines him.
Gaius: Merlin, did you bring the snake?
Merlin: I brought its head. I couldn’t get all of it.
Gaius: Could you run and get it? It will help us identify the species and how it got in the castle.
Merlin: Of course. *leaves*
Morgana: Will you be able to heal him?
Gaius: Of course, my dear. I can make the antivenin immediately. It’s a good thing he killed the snake. Otherwise I don’t think I could have made the right potion. I’ve never seen a snake such as this.
Merlin: I’m back! Here’s the rest of the snake.
Gaius: My lady, you may return to your chambers. I’m sure he will be healed in the morning. Merlin, could you escort her there?
Merlin: Of course.
Merlin and Morgana leave, and Gaius continues to make the antivenin. Once it’s completed, he gives it to Josiah and moves him into Merlin’s room so that he can rest. After that he starts studying the snake. Merlin soon returns.
Merlin: Have you finished the antivenin?
Gaius: Yes. I already gave it to him.
Merlin: How could this have happened?
Gaius: I really don’t know. I’ve never seen a snake like this in my life.
Merlin: *mumbles* It looks like the snakes on Knight Valiant’s shield.
Gaius: What’s that?
Merlin: Nothing.
Merlin sneaks out to spy on Valiant, remembering the hissing and the snake’s eye blinking on Valiant’s shield in the armory. He looks through a crack in door to Valiant’s chambers. The knight was holding up a mouse to the shield.
Valiant: Dinner time. Come on.
The snakes slither out of the shield and snap at the mouse. Valiant feeds it them. Merlin scurries away, but bumps into the vase on a pedestal. Valiant hears him and follows. Merlin quickly hides in an alcove. Valiant eventually gives up the chase. After making sure he’s alone, Merlin runs back to his and Gaius’s quarters.
Merlin: I’ve just seen the snakes in Valiant’s shield come alive. He’s using magic.
Gaius: Are you sure?
Merlin: The snake ate a mouse - one swallow, straight down. The snakes look just like this one. It must be one of the snakes from the shield. There were only two but the shield had three snakes on it. I have to tell Arthur.
Gaius: Is there any chance you might be mistaken?
Merlin: I know magic when I see it.
Gaius: Perhaps, but have you any proof?
Merlin: Don’t you believe me?
Gaius: I fear you’ll land yourself in trouble. How will you explain why you were in Valiant’s chambers?
Merlin: What does that matter? He can use magic to cheat in the tournament! What if Sir Ewan would have been the one to fight him? He could have died!
Gaius: But you can’t go accusing a knight of using magic without proof. The King would never accept the word of servant over the word of a knight.
Merlin: What? So what I say doesn’t count for anything?
Gaius: I’m afraid it counts for very little as far as the King is concerned. That’s the way it is. Now, I must inform the king of what happened. Josiah won’t be able to compete.
Merlin: You said he would be better by morning.
Gaius: That was before I knew it was a magical snake. Who knows how long it could take to heal him.
Merlin: But that means that Valiant is back in the tournament! He could put Arthur and the other knights in danger with that shield!
Gaius: I’m sorry Merlin. I can’t help it. It’s my duty to inform the king when a competitor can’t compete. I have to go.

She closes her door and locks it. I head to Uther’s chambers, thinking of the future that I could maybe have with Morgana. But as I walk through the corridors, a snake darts out and bites me on the leg. I realize that Valiant has sent one of his snakes on me. I grab it and hit it against the wall to kill it, but as it dies, my vision tunnels and I fall into darkness.
Morgana’s POV
After I closed the door, I leaned against it for a few minutes. So much had just happened. I was walking with Gwen from our evening meal, and I saw her yawning. I told her that she could go home and that I would be fine to get myself ready for bed. She protested, but I insisted. Once she left, I kept going towards my chambers. All of the sudden, someone reached out from an alcove and pulled me in. I saw that it was Valiant; his eyes darkened with lust. He immediately grabbed me, groping me all over. He pushed me against the wall, keeping my arms pinned against it so that I could barely fight back. As his mouth came towards mine, I let out a desperate scream to alert the guards. Then Josiah came and saved me, fighting Valiant off and threatening to tell the king about his actions. I was so grateful that I kissed Josiah on the cheek once he brought me back to my room. I can’t believe I actually was attracted to Valiant at first! He’s a perfect example of what a knight shouldn’t be. I’m glad Josiah’s going to get him banished for this. When I finally start to get ready for bed, I hear a yell and a sword drawn outside my room. I quickly grab a cloak and dagger and run out. I hear clanging to the right and go that way. The clanging sound stops before I hear a thump. As I round the corner I see a horrifying sight. A man is face down on the ground, unconscious. My breath hitches as I see a large snake lying on the ground a few inches away, its head separated from the rest of it. Once I realize the snake is dead, I gingerly approach the man and turn him over, then I see who it is.
Me: Josiah!!!
I immediately run to find Gaius or Merlin. Josiah can’t die because of some stupid snake! He’s the only nobleman who really treats me with respect. Heck, he just saved me! Now, it’s my turn.
{A/N: I know this was kind of short, but I ran out of time to do more. I got distracted getting an account on the Wizarding World and taking an official sorting hat quiz. I’m a Ravenclaw! Just as I suspected. I also got the heron as my patronus! Anyway, I hope you like this small part!}

Season 1 Episode 2 – Valiant
Previously
When I pass the board on my way to my tent, I realize that I’m supposed to fight Valiant in today’s round. Now I’m really regretting doing that. I’ll have to be on my guard now.
Arthur’s match is first. I stand by Merlin at the entrance to the arena. All of the sudden, Gaius pops up behind us and speaks to Merlin.
Gaius: Is it my imagination, or are you beginning to enjoy yourself?
Merlin: It... *sighs* It isn’t totally horrible all the time.
Arthur wins his match fairly quickly. Everyone cheers for him.
Merlin: Yes!
Me: Yeah, Arthur!
I pat Arthur on the back as he comes out of the arena.
Me: Great job, mate!
Arthur: Thank you!
Me: I’m up next! Wish me luck!
I walk out onto the field and wave to the crowd. I see Morgana watching and smiling so I smile back and bow respectfully to her and the king. I put on my helmet and lock it in place so it doesn’t fall off. Valiant walks into the arena smugly, waving to the crowd and winking at the girls. I roll my eyes in disgust at his actions. He puts on his helmet and we face each other. He draws his sword, and I take up my sword and shield, getting in my fighting stance. My plan is to stay far enough away from him so that he can’t use the snakes. The fight starts. He charges me, and I dodge him before punching him in the back with my gauntlets {A/N: the special armored gloves that knights wore}. He yells and tries to swing back around quickly. He swings his sword, but I block it with my own. We trade sword blows, getting a feel for each other’s strength. I can tell that he is out for blood. I realize that I’m going to need to take a more defensive approach. His sword work is as strong as, if not stronger than mine, or at least more forceful from his desire to win at any cost. I drop my sword and focus on my shield. He starts raining blows down on my shield, but I stand firm. Using my footwork to draw him into tiring himself out. I get a few good punches in here and there as well, using my gauntlets and my shield. He stops for a second, and I use this opportunity to take my shield and throw it at him. It hits him in the stomach and he groans. The crowd cheers at my new (to them) style of fighting. I catch the shield and then throw it at the wall of the arena. Valiant sees an opening and tries to make a last effort swing at me. My shield bounces off the walls twice before hitting Valiant in the back. He falls to his knees in pain, dropping his sword and shield. I pick up my sword and point it at his chest. Then I sheathe my sword and give him my hand to help him up. He refuses. As I’m declared the winner, I can see the hatred in Valiant’s eyes. He stubbornly gets up on his own and trudges to his tent. I walk off the field to my tent, receiving congratulations from the other knights. I did it. I saved Arthur and Ewan. This adventure is over!
That evening, I walk back from the evening meal when I hear a scream. I quickly draw my sword and run to find out what’s wrong. As I round a corner, I see Valiant in an alcove pinning a girl against the wall. I see a glimpse of her face. Morgana! He goes in to kiss her. I yell at him.
Me: HEY!
I run and push him away from her. I punch him in the gut, then point my sword at his neck. Morgana stands beside me and I put my hand protectively around her.
Me: I see you like to take advantage of other people, Valiant. First servants, now women. And the king’s ward, no less! I am disgusted by you! A knight is supposed to protect others! You do not deserve the title nor the privilege of being a knight. I warned you before and I do so again. Don’t you dare lay a hand on her. If you do, you will regret it! I will report your doings to the king, and you will be thrown out of Camelot. Get out. Now!
Valiant slowly backs up and leaves, scowling at me. I turn to Morgana and she buries her head in my chest, still breathing heavily. I just hold her there, comforting her and ignoring the rapid beating of my heart. After a few minutes, she starts to calm down, so we pull apart.
Me: Are you okay?
Morgana: *taking a deep breath* Yes.
Me: Did he do anything to you?
Morgana: No, you stopped him before he really got anywhere. What a night to send Gwen home a little early.
Me: I’m so sorry Morgana! That should have never happened. I wish I could have struck him down where he stood for what he tried to do to you!
Morgana: Thank you for saving me, Josiah.
Me: You are most welcome, Morgana. I just wish I could have gotten here sooner. Would you like me to escort you to your chambers?
Morgana: Please.
I give her my arm and she takes it. I can’t shake the feeling that her holding my arm feels so right. We walk in silence except for the occasional directions she gives me so I can get her to her room. When we arrive at her room, she lets go and I open the door for her.
Morgana: Thank you again, Josiah.
Me: It is my honour and duty as a knight to keep people safe. And, well, you’re worth protecting.
We both blush a little and I turn away to head to my chambers. Then I hear Morgana call, so I turn back.
Morgana: Josiah!
Me: Yes?
She hesitantly steps toward me. I have a slight confused look on my face, wondering what she’s doing. She quickly pecks me on the cheek. I blush again, harder.
Morgana: Good night.
Me: Good night.

Valiant sees an opening and tristes to make a last effort swing at me.
I turn to Morgana, who is still breathing heavily. She starts to cry and buries her head in my chest. I just hold her there, comforting her and ignoring the rapid beating of my heart. After a few minutes, she starts to calm down. We pull apart and I give her my handkerchief to wipe her face.
Me: Are you okay?
Morgana: *sniffing* Yes.
Me: Yes?
She steps toward me and kisses me on the cheek. I blush again, harder.
Morgana: Good night.
Me: Good night.
(A/N: I am SOOOO sorry I’ve been behind everyone! I was writing this on Saturday but got distracted. Then I had a busy day yesterday. I hope you like this chapter!)
Season 1 Episode 2 – Valiant
Previously
Arthur nods and I split off to go to my room and drop off my gear. But then I get a strange feeling. It’s almost like how I imagine Peter Parker’s spider-sense works. I’m not sure what’s going on, so I take my collapsible crossbow with me, putting it in its holster. Tonight is probably going to get interesting.
I walk into the throne room and end up behind Arthur in the queue to see Morgana and the king. Valiant is ahead of us, and I can hear his conversations.
Valiant: Knight Valiant of the Western Isles, My Lord.
Uther: I saw you fighting today. You have a very aggressive style.
Valiant: Well, as My Lord said, "To lose is to be disgraced."
Uther: I couldn't agree more.
Again, I roll my eyes and inwardly groan at that statement.
Uther: Knight Valiant, may I present the Lady Morgana, my ward.
Valiant bows to kiss Morgana's hand while Arthur looks on with a wry grin.
Valiant: My Lady.
Morgana: I saw you competing today.
Valiant: I saw you watching. I understand the tournament champion has the honour of escorting My Lady to the feast.
Morgana: That's correct.
Valiant: Then I will give everything to win the tournament.
She smiles and nods to him, he nods back.
Valiant: My Lady.
I again have that weird feeling. Valiant walks over to shake hands with other knights; Morgana and Guinevere watch him. I wonder if perhaps I’m getting that feeling because of him. Arthur bows to his father.
Uther: Arthur.
Arthur: Father.
Arthur looks over at Valiant before walking to Morgana. At the same time, I get to Uther.
Me: *bowing* Your majesty.
Uther: Josiah. You did very well in the tournament today. I have never seen a style like yours. You never used your weapon until he was at your mercy. That was quite impressive.
Me: It is called the “Art of the Silent Fist.” I learned it from a great warrior in my homeland. I prefer to win battles with my mind rather than with my strength. Though I can use strength when necessary.
Uther: Intriguing! Well, I’ll look forward to seeing you in action tomorrow.
While I’m talking to Uther, I see Arthur walk off and Morgana's smile fade. She speaks in a low voice to Gwen as I walk up.
Morgana: Could Arthur be any more annoying? I so hope Knight Valiant wins the tournament.
Gwen: You don't really mean that.
Morgana: Yes, I do.
Me: *with fake hurt* Forgot me so quickly, my lady? I take great offense to that!
I smirk as I take Morgana’s hand and bow dramatically. Gwen tries to hold in her laughter at my antics. Morgana looks a little embarrassed but tries to blow it off by rolling her eyes.
Morgana: Oh! Josiah! I didn’t see you there.
Me: *grinning* It’s ok, Morgana. I’m used to being in the background.
Morgana: *concerned* What does that mean?
Me: I guess there’s stuff about me that you don’t know yet!
I wiggle my eyebrows and wave my hands around to seem more “mysterious.” We all laugh and I bid them farewell and head over to the other knights. As soon as I see Valiant, though. I get a weird feeling again. I look in the direction he is and I see that he’s staring at Morgana in a way that makes my skin crawl. I don’t remember this in the show. I know it’s been a couple years because of my “travels,” but I think I would have remembered this. Maybe my presence is already affecting things. I try to keep a watch on Valiant all night, but nothing happens. Once Morgana has left, I try to see what Valiant will do. All he does is stare at her as she leaves and then returns to his conversation. Maybe I was wrong. Morgana is pretty, so maybe he was just admiring her. But I can’t shake the feeling that he had an almost hungry gaze when he looked at her. The evening’s festivities end and everyone returns to their rooms, including Valiant. I go to bed wondering what he wants besides winning the tournament.
{time skip}
The next morning, I gather my gear and head to my tent. Once there, I see that my sword needs sharpening, so I go to the armory to get one of the sharpening stones. I open the door to Merlin gathering Arthur’s gear.
Me: Hello Merlin!
Merlin: Oh! Hello Josiah! What-
At that moment, we hear a soft hissing sound. I suddenly remember that this is when Merlin discovers Valiant’s shield. I search around the room, looking for it.
Merlin: Hello? Is there someone there?
I am still looking around when I hear Valiant.
Valiant: Can I help you with something, boy?
I quickly draw my sword and point it at Valiant. I speak coldly and threateningly.
Me: Step away from him.
Valiant: He’s a snooping servant-
Me: *gritting my teeth* Drop. Your. Sword.
Valiant obeys, but sneers darkly at us.
Valiant: It’s of no consequence. I caught him somewhere he shouldn’t be. He should be punished.
Me: I am a personal friend of his master the prince, so I’ll tell him and let him handle it.
Valiant: Very well. You’d best be on your way, then.
Merlin: Right, yeah. No problem.
Merlin picks up Arthur’s armour and stumbles on his way out. Valiant and I watch him leave. Once Merlin is gone, I turn on Valiant.
Me: Don’t you dare lay a hand on him! If you do, you will regret!
I pick up one of the sharpening stones and stride out of the armory, leaving behind a stunned Valiant. I know I probably shouldn’t have done that, but I felt this protective instinct just take over. I’ll need to make sure I keep that under control. When I pass the board on my way to my tent, I realize that I’m supposed to fight Valiant in today’s round. Now I’m really regretting doing that. I’ll have to be on my guard now.
(A/N: I have decided that most of the story will be in Josiah’s point of view. The only times it won’t be are when I need to show an event where he’s not present or if the story needs it. Otherwise, just assume it’s his POV.)
Season 1 Episode 2 – Valiant
Previously
I go back to my tent and prepare for my first match. I can feel Valiant staring me down as I head out onto the field. It’s time to put my plan in motion!
Arthur’s fight is first. I can see that he truly is very skilled. I see Merlin at the entrance to the arena and decide to go stand next to him. He cheers for Arthur.
Me: So, enjoying your first tournament, eh, Merlin?
Merlin: Surprisingly. It’s quite thrilling actually.
Me: Yeah, when you’re not out there! You think you were sore yesterday! *we laugh* The only way to avoid that is to win quickly. *Arthur is declared the winner* Like that.
Looking at the board, I see my first bout is after the one after Arthur. I pat Merlin on the back.
Me: Well, I have to go get ready. I’m up soon.
Merlin: Good luck!
Me: *mysteriously* In my experience, there’s no such thing as luck.
Merlin looks confused for a second before turning his attention to Arthur, who was coming out of the arena. I go to my tent and get my remaining gear. I put my helmet on and lock it in place so that my neck isn’t exposed. I decide to use my sword and shield in this round. Hearing the cheers that mean the next round is complete, I walk out to the field. I quickly examine the knight I’m fighting. He wears basic equipment in purple, and his helmet keeps his face exposed. I chuckle as he tries to be intimidating by swinging his sword around. I can tell from his facial expression that he’s the one who’s actually scared. It’s probably the fact that my armor covers my whole body in strong armor. What he doesn’t know is that it’s extremely light, so I don’t lose any speed or agility. I decide to give him a chance, so I sheathe my sword and put my shield on my back. The battle starts. I wait for him to make the first move, and I’m not disappointed. He yells and runs at me, swinging his sword wildly. I easily sidestep him. His momentum carries him into the wall. The crowd goes “Ooh!” I can practically hear the grimaces. The knight shakes himself off and tries to attack me again. He swings his sword at my neck, but I lean backwards, the sword passing inches in front of my face. His arm flies past and he loses his balance, falling to the ground. In one fluid motion, I draw my sword and point it at his chest. The crowd cheers and I am declared the winner. After putting away my sword, I take off my helmet and pull the man up.
Me: Good game, mate!
Knight: That was impressive.
Me: Just a lot of training. What’s your name?
Knight: Sir Ewan. And yours?
Me: Lord Josiah.
We shake hands and Ewan heads off to his tent. I smile as I watch him walk off. A life has been saved. The first of many I hope. The rest of the day’s matches go fairly quickly. My second battle was canceled after my opponent saw my first match. He decided to forfeit, which I felt bad about, but I knew it was for the best. After gathering my gear, I walk over to Merlin and Arthur, who are watching Valiant win the last match of the day. Thankfully, he hadn’t used his shield snakes today. So far, my plan was going perfectly.
Merlin: Knight Valiant looks pretty handy with a sword.
Me: That he is.
Valiant exits the arena and stops near us.
Valiant: May I offer my congratulations on your victories today, my lords?
Arthur & Me: Likewise.
Valiant: I hope to see you both at the reception this evening. *leaves*
Merlin: Creep.
We all snort at that. The silence that follows quickly becomes awkward.
Arthur: Uh, for tomorrow you need to repair my shield, wash my tunic, clean my boots, sharpen my sword, and polish my chainmail.
I roll my eyes at Arthur. Merlin gathers up Arthur’s gear and heads inside the castle. Arthur and I walk up at a slower pace.
Arthur: Well done today, Josiah. That was the first time that anyone has ever forfeited a match.
Me: Thank you, Arthur! You did well too! I have seen very few duels that went as quickly as yours.
Arthur: I appreciate that. Are you coming to the reception?
Me: Yes. I just have to drop off my gear at my room. I’ll see you soon.

Josiah’s POV
As I lay in bed, I think about today and my time with Morgana, Arthur, Gwen, and Merlin. I’m so happy that I’m making friends here in Camelot.
Josiah’s POV
BEEP!!! BEEP!!! BEEP!!!
My watch alarm goes off and for a minute I think I’m back home. But when I sit up, I remember. I’m in Camelot now. I quickly silence my watch before someone hears it. I look to see what time it is. 8:00. I wonder how my family is doing. My mom is probably having breakfast with my dad before he goes down to his home office to check the orders from the family business and she starts her housework. My sister and her roommate are probably finishing getting ready for the day at the dance company they are a part of. Not much has changed in the past decade, except my sister moving out – and my getting stuck in the past in Narnia, of course. Aslan told me that I’ll return home once I’ve completed my destiny here. But now I know that will take years. I wish there was some way to contact them. I know that when I return, it will be as though I never left. But that doesn’t make it any easier for me. I sigh and get up, going about my normal routine I started in Narnia. I dress for the day, then I read my special Book while I eat breakfast. I try to make contact with Aslan, but he doesn’t respond. I guess I’m on my own for now. I hope to reveal my true intentions to someone soon, most likely Merlin. I just don’t know how. All of the sudden, I remember that today is the tournament! I quickly gather my gear and head out to the field and find the tent that was set up for me. After setting up my extra gear, I head toward the arena. As I’m on my way, I see Merlin helping Arthur put on his armor. For a minute, Merlin forgets the sword, which makes me chuckle. I wait close to the entrance to walk in with Arthur. I see Morgana and Gwen sit down in the stands and wave to me. As I wave back, Arthur suddenly pops up behind me.
Arthur: So, you’ve taken a liking to Morgana!
Me: *blushing* No!
Arthur: *smirks* Yeah, ok. Oh! Just so you know, whoever wins the tournament escorts her to the victory feast.
Me: Wait, what?!
Without answering, Arthur walks into the arena. I completely forgot about that detail. I quickly join him and the other knights. I end up next to Valiant, which reminds me of what I need to do today. Uther stands up and gives his speech.
Uther: Knights of the realm, it's a great honour to welcome you to a tournament at Camelot. Over the next three days, you will come to put your bravery to the test, your skills as warriors, and of course, to challenge the reigning champion, my son, Prince Arthur. Only one can have the honour of being crowned champion, and he will receive a prize of 1,000 gold pieces. *a box is opened revealing the gold* It is in combat that we learn a knight's true nature, whether he is indeed a warrior or a coward. The tournament begins!
I inwardly scoff at that last sentence, but I know that’s why I’m here: to change that perspective. I go back to my tent and prepare for my first match. I can feel Valiant staring me down as I head out onto the field. It’s time to put my plan in motion!

(A/N: I am retconning Josiah knocking at the door. Now, he just walks in)
Previously
Josiah’s POV
When I arrive at Gaius and Merlin’s quarters, I forget to knock and just go in. I am greeted by an odd sight.
Josiah’s POV
As I open the door to walk in, I see Gaius “massaging” Merlin’s back. Merlin quickly gets up to greet me – or to get away from Gaius. I can’t tell which.
Merlin: Ah Josiah! Welcome! *a disturbed look crosses his face* How long have you been here?
Me: *confused* I just got here.
A visible look of relief settles on his face. It’s then that I realize that I just missed Merlin’s conversation with Gaius when he uses magic to bring over his book. He probably was scared I saw something. Of course, I would never say anything, but he doesn’t know that yet.
Merlin: It’s great to see you, Josiah! Gaius, this is Lord Josiah Sobieski of Narnia. I’d like you to meet my guardian, Gaius. He’s the court physician.
Me: So I’ve heard. *bowing to Gaius* Sir, it is truly a pleasure to meet a man so learned in the science of today.
Gaius: Thank you, my lord. The pleasure is mine for having a Narnian here.
Me: *surprised* You’ve heard of Narnia?
Gaius: I have. My father was a merchant. He traveled through Narnia once and told me stories of his journey when I was a boy.
Me: Woah! That’s amazing!
Gaius: So what brings you here, Sire?
Me: Please, call me Josiah. I came to visit Merlin and to meet you! You are spoken of very highly by the court so I wanted to meet you for myself. Also, I need to get some new medical supplies.
Gaius: Are you a physician?
Me: Not entirely. I just always keep what I call a “first aid kit” along with my normal gear in the event of an injury during a journey or battle. I know how to bandage someone, as well as diagnose different injuries. I like to have a roll of bandages, string or twine, potions to relieve pain, and antivenins for common venoms and poisons.
Gaius: That is a very smart idea. Camelot should do that as well. I’ll get those things ready for you. The potions will take a little longer, but I should be able to have Merlin deliver them tomorrow. I’ll help with what antivenins I can, but I’d have to have the venom or poison itself to actually make them.
Me: Thank you so much! And don’t worry about the antivenins, I can make those myself as I need them. *to Merlin* Now Merlin, I need to talk to you for a moment.
Merlin: Okay.
We go up to Merlin’s room, which, surprisingly, isn’t that messy. Merlin sits on his bed and I sit on the chair.
Merlin: What do you need to talk about?
Me: You, Merlin.
Merlin: *nervously* Me? Wh-what about me?
Me: The way that you treat Arthur. You need to treat him with more respect. I know you are dealing with a lot right now, but so is Arthur. The burden of destiny falls on many people’s shoulders. He needs your help. He may not show it, but he does. Yes, he can be a prat, but you don’t need to mention it all the time. What he really needs is a friend.
Merlin: How can I be friends with someone who hates me?
Me: He doesn’t hate you. Dislike you? Yes. Get annoyed by you? Definitely. But you treat him like a normal person. That means a lot to nobles. It sounds weird, but I know. Sometimes, we just wish we were normal, had friends that could joke around with us, or not have such high expectations put on us. A wise man once said, “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.” So just, try. Okay?
Merlin: *sighs* Okay. I’ll try. I can’t make any promises that I won’t tease him.
Me: You don’t have to. Just treat him like a normal human being, but still give him some respect like you would a friend.
Merlin: *grins* So, like you then?
Me: *smirking* Of course! Because I’m perfect and always right.
We both laugh at that. For a while, we continue talking about random stuff. Then Gaius comes up and gives me my supplies. I bid them farewell and return to my chambers. As I lay in bed, I think about today and my time with Morgana, Arthur, Gwen, and Merlin. I’m so happy that I’m making friends here in Camelot.

Josiah’s POV
Me: *looks him in the eye* Arthur. It’s okay! I feel the same way. I don’t want to be “above” people. I want them to like me for me, not for my title and position. I understand!
Arthur: Fine. You’re right. But don’t you dare speak a word of this to anyone. Especially Merlin!
Me: *grinning* You have my word! Now why don’t we get started with that sword trick?
Josiah’s POV
After a few hours of practice, Arthur and I went back to the castle. A servant had come to tell him that Uther requested his presence in the throne room for a meeting of sorts, so he had to leave. I decided to visit Merlin and introduce myself to Gaius. He was always someone I admired, despite some of his mistakes. After I dropped off most of my armour and gear in my room, I am heading across the courtyard to find the physician’s chambers. I happen upon Morgana and Gwen walking back from the market. I stop to say hello and to officially meet Gwen.
Me: Hello Morgana!
Morgana: Hello Josiah! This is Guinevere. She is my closest and dearest friend. Gwen, this is Lord Josiah, the ambassador from Narnia who is here to create a treaty with Camelot.
Me: It is a pleasure to meet you, Guinevere.
I take the future queen’s hand and bow, without kissing it. Gwen blushes at the complement and at my bow.
Gwen: Please, call me Gwen, my Lord! And you don’t need to bow.
Me: Well, Gwen, you’re Morgana’s friend, and I always bow when I meet a lady.
Gwen: But I’m just a maid! People will think you’re crazy if they see you bowing to a maid.
Me: I don’t care what they think, that is the code of my order: to treat ALL women with respect and honour.
Morgana: So, where are you off to, Josiah? I thought you were training with Arthur.
Me: I was, but Uther requested his presence at a meeting, so he had to go. But not before I beat him a few times!
Morgana and Gwen both grin at that. I remember that Gwen doesn’t particularly like Arthur yet.
Gwen: He probably deserved it. He can be a bully.
Gwen immediately freezes before trying to backtrack, realizing what she just said. I have to admit that, even though she’s not my type, she’s kind of cute when she does that.
Gwen: I mean- he- uhh!
Me: *chuckling* Don’t worry! I won’t tell a soul. It can be our *gesturing to Morgana and myself* little secret. I agree with you, he can be a bit of a prat. But he has a good heart underneath that rough exterior.
Morgana: *grumbling* It must be pretty deep underneath!
We all look at each other for a second before we burst out laughing. After we calm down, I see the sun is getting closer to the horizon.
Me: Well, my ladies, I must be off. I am going to go visit the court physician. I’m out of medical supplies to take on journeys, so I need to stock up. I’ll see you soon, I’m sure?
Morgana: Yes, probably very soon.
Me: It was truly wonderful to meet you Gwen! I’m glad that Morgana has a friend like you to rely on. *to Morgana* Until next time, my lady.
With that, I bow toward Morgana and then Gwen before heading to the physician’s quarters. I can imagine Morgana rolling her eyes at my last statement and can hear it’s true when I hear Gwen’s laugh ring out across the courtyard. When I arrive at Gaius and Merlin’s quarters, I knock on the door.
Gaius: Come in!
I am greeted by an odd sight.

Third Person POV
Arthur: That was just the warm up.
Arthur is interrupted by some chuckling off to the side. He turns and sees Josiah striding onto the field.
Josiah’s POV
As I walk over to Merlin and Arthur, I see Merlin poorly dodging Arthur’s attacks. I can’t help but chuckle when I see Merlin crumple to the ground. I never really understood this part of the episode. If Arthur needed to train for the tournament, why did he train with Merlin, who could barely use a sword? I decide that I’m going to teach Arthur a little lesson about using Merlin as a human training dummy.
Me: So, Arthur! I see you were too scared to fight me and decided to beat up poor Merlin here instead!
Arthur: *scowling* No! Of course not! Like I said, I was just warming up. It’s not like you didn’t do that with Morgana! *smirks*
Me: *rolling my eyes* For your information, that was a joint idea and we actually tied. She gave me a good challenge! It’s been a while since my skills have been put to the test like that.
Arthur: *arrogantly* If that’s the case, I didn’t even need to train with Merlin then!
Me: *raising my eyebrow* Is that so? Well then, why don’t we have a little wager on our first duel of training?
Arthur: Name the terms!
Me: *thinking* If you win, I’ll throw the fight if we go against each other in the tournament. If I win, you give Merlin the rest of the day off for fighting him when he clearly knows almost nothing about swordplay. No offense Merlin.
Merlin: None taken.
Arthur: It’s a deal! I can’t wait to win the tournament!
We both draw our swords and start circling each other.
Arthur: Now I warn you, I’ve been trained to kill since birth. *Merlin scoffs*
Me: Really? And how long have you been training to be a prat?
I know I shouldn’t have made a reference to that when I wasn’t even there, but I couldn’t help it. Arthur’s and Merlin’s mouths are hanging open, probably for different reasons.
Arthur: *spluttering* Did Merlin tell you to say that?!
Me: No, I must have just come to the same conclusion.
Arthur attacks and I block his sword easily. The battle goes similarly to my duel with Morgana, but easier for me since I’ve seen how Arthur fights and know what to expect. He relies more on strength and speed than on finesse. After a few rounds, I use a particular flick of my wrist to disarm him and point my sword at his chest. He holds up his arms in surprised surrender.
Arthur: What was that?
Me: That was a special move that I learned from King Edmund. I had the same reaction as you when he used it on me not too long ago. I could teach you if you want! But first, it’s time to collect on the bet!
Arthur: *groaning* Fine! Merlin, you can have the rest of the day off. *under his breath* Even though it’s your first full day.
Merlin: Thank you, Sire! And thank you, Josiah!
Me: No problem!
We watch as Merlin walks off toward the castle, Arthur scowling and me grinning at the skinny manservant. Arthur then turns toward me.
Arthur: Now why did you do that?! How is Merlin supposed to learn respect for me with you swooping in and saving him?
Me: Don’t worry Arthur. Merlin will grow to respect you. I truly believe that. If you want, I can talk to him about it.
Arthur: Not sure how much good it will do.
Me: Admit it, though. You like how he treats like any other person.
Arthur: Of course not!

The yellow knight turns toward me and I see his face. I hold back a gasp as I recognize the man before me. Sir Valiant has arrived.
Josiah’s POV
I fake a smile at the ill-named knight and leave to find Arthur and Merlin. I can’t bear to be in his presence. I take some deep breaths to calm myself. It is vital to my mission that I do as much good as I can to fix the mistakes of the past without too drastically altering the timeline. There are some who wouldn’t appreciate that. I close my eyes to remember where Arthur and Merlin are training. The picture returns vividly and I see their location: a field just outside the castle walls. I open my eyes and walk there briskly. I don’t want to miss what happens next!
Third Person POV
As Josiah goes to the field, Merlin is finishing putting on his armor while Arthur swings around his sword waiting for Merlin to be ready.
Arthur: Ready?
Merlin: Would it make any difference if I said no?
Arthur: Not really.
Merlin draws his sword and Arthur attacks, calling out the places he’s attacking for Merlin to block, but often hitting Merlin anyway.
Arthur: Body. Shield. Body. Shield.
Merlin: Shield.
Arthur: Head.
Merlin: Head? Ow.
Arthur: Come on, Merlin. You're not even trying. *tags Merlin’s back*
Merlin: Ow! I am.
Arthur: Once more.
Merlin: Oh, no.
Arthur: To the left. To the right. And left. Head.
Merlin: Ow!
Arthur: Come on, Merlin! I've got a tournament to win.
Merlin: Can we stop now, please? Ow! Shield. Body.
Arthur: Shield.
Merlin: Shield. Ah.
Arthur hits him on the head. Merlin topples over backwards and his helmet rolls off. He groans.
Merlin: Ow.
Arthur: You're braver than you look. Most servants collapse after the first blow.
Merlin: Is it over?
Arthur: That was just the warm up.
Arthur is interrupted by some chuckling off to the side. He turns and sees Josiah striding onto the field.
(A/N: Hello Once and Future Fandom! Sorry this part took so long! I’ve been a little distracted recently and also decided to rewatch “Valiant” to properly portray this episode. I started writing a really great chapter today, then I had to go do something else and my document didn’t save! 😩 So this is a lot shorter than it was supposed to be. I’ll do my best to finish the next part tomorrow. Have a blessed night!)
Make your own mini "A Beginner's Guide to Natural Poisons"! Unlike the Gaius' Grimoire printable this one doesn't have repeating pages and could be potentially slightly useful. . . I guess 😅

So, the past couple days I had been working mini version of Gaius' grimoire and it's a printable so anyone can make one too if they'd like. I also included instructions to try and make it easier or people. It's mostly just for looks because the pages repeat since I could only find so many pictures of the pages, but I'm working on making printables for another book where I do a bit of research on a few poisonous plants and compile it. That one will have actual information in it and thus in my opinion be a bit cuter lol. Anyways, here's the link to the Google Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11EZ7z7uX_NHjrpy25fmOW0kl1fRmu1iceex6F9IJ7mA/edit?usp=sharing
I hope you guys like it! C:

Josiah’s POV
As I walk over to my other gear to drink some water, I hear someone start clapping slowly. I turn around to see someone I did not expect to see here at this hour.
Josiah’s POV
Standing at the edge of the training grounds was Morgana standing in trousers, a shirt, and specially designed armour. She looks impressed but has a smirk on her face. I’m startled at her sudden appearance, wondering how long she was watching. I get to my stuff and wipe my face with a washcloth I brought. She walks up.
Morgana: That was quite impressive.
Me: Thank you, my lady.
Morgana: I thought I told you to just call me Morgana.
Me: *smirking back* Of course . . . M’lady!
Morgana pouts and smacks my arm, looking annoyed. She looks funny like that so I keep going.
Me: Ok! Ok! I get it. So what are you doing up at this hour m’la- *she shoots me a glare* Morgana? And in armour no less?
Morgana: I’m here to, um, what’s the thing you do at a training ground? Oh yes, train!
Me: I see.
Morgana: What, do you think I can’t fight?
Me: I don’t doubt that you can. You’re probably better than many of the knights.
Morgana: I am. I even beat Arthur.
Me: Ohh! In that case, why don’t we spar a little bit? I could use some real fighting to warm up for my training session with Arthur.
Morgana: Why not? I like beating people better than dummies anyway. Uther never lets me train with the guards because it’s not ladylike. So my victory will be that much sweeter!
Morgana and I draw our swords. We circle around a bit feeling out each other’s defenses. Our swords clash, ringing out over the field. We spin around. Morgana’s style is much more refined then some of the men I’ve fought who focused more on brute strength than on intelligence. I go on the defensive, watching how she connects her strikes. I try to let her tire herself out, but she sees through my plan and pulls back. So instead, I start moving through my own footwork. I switch to a single-hand grip and start pushing her back. I pretend to stifle a yawn to rile her up, which works. She starts using more ferocity, although it’s more than I expected. As I spin and switch hands, I feel the chill of a blade against the back of my neck.
Morgana: I got you.
Me: And I got you.
She looks down and sees that I’m holding my sword in a reverse grip, aimed at her side. It’s a tie. We let down our swords, and I start to turn around.
Me: I guess it’s a tie.
Morgana: I guess so.
She looks up, and only then do we realize how close we are. I quickly back up a bit and she does the same, red colouring our cheeks. Whether that’s from the energy we just put out or not, I don’t know.
Me: You are definitely a great swordsman, Morgana.
Morgana: Thank you. So are you. I almost feel bad for Arthur. Almost. *she laughs*
Me: *laughing* So do I! And thank you.
After a moment of comfortable silence just recovering from our duel. I start gathering my things. Once I have everything, I turn back to Morgana.
Me: I’d better be off to find Arthur for training. I’m surprised he’s not here yet.
Morgana: Yes, you don’t want to be on the receiving end of his annoyance!
Me: *grinning* I feel like you’d be the one to watch out for.
Morgana: *smirks* You wouldn’t be wrong.
Me: Well, this was fun! We should do this again sometime!
Morgana: We should. I’m glad to actually have a challenge.
Me: *bowing* Until next time then, m’lady!
When I rise I see her gaping at me. I chuckle and jog off the field toward the citadel. Searching for Merlin and Arthur. As I walk through the courtyard, I bump into a knight wearing yellow.
Me: Oh! Sorry Sir! My apologies.
Yellow Knight: It’s all right, fellow knight. There was no harm done.
He turns toward me and I see his face. I hold back a gasp as I recognize the man before me. Sir Valiant has arrived.
